Haddix churns out young adult dystopian novels like a machine. While she does a capable job with this, more than capable really, I feel like either the dystopian genre has run its course for me. For a large part of the novel, I simply could not engage with the narrative in any depth. I found it far too easy to set down the novel and come back to it later.

That being said, Haddix' narrative flows smoothly in a not quite predictable course. The questions Rosi has throughout the novel echo those the reader is sure to have. The dramatic revelation towards the end of the novel is sure to bring readers back for the second and third books in the series, although not me for the reasons I mentioned above. 

I would like to know more about Edwy. I fell like his character got shortchanged in the narrative although he likely makes more of an appearance in the later books. 

Anyone who still enjoys dystopian novels will certainly enjoy this book.
