This is the first part of Chilly Flame’s Law and Order: Special Victims Unit (SVU) three part series. (when I first read it years ago her handle was Harriet). SVU was my second fanfic obsession. I started reading SVU fics around 2003 and only Olivia/Alex fics. This series is one of my favorites.

For those of you not familiar with SVU, the main characters in this story are Detective Olivia Benson and Assistant District Attorney Alexandria Cabot. Cabot was introduced in Season 2 as the squad’s ADA. Cabot had a high conviction rate but her tenacity occasionally gets her into trouble. In Season 5 she was ordered shot (or was shot) by the drug lord, Cesar Velez. Alex was prosecuting a rape case involving one of Velez’s men. She appears to die in Olivia’s arms. But she survived and was put into witness protection. Alex agrees to go into hiding to protect her mother from Velez. Only the FBI, Olivia and her SVU partner, Elliot Stabler know that she survived. Alex is a Harvard graduate and comes from a very wealthy family.

Det. Olivia Benson is the tough as nails or as Alex describes her – a Cagney & Lacey type, a tough broad. But she can also calm victims and gaining their trust, especially children. She herself was a product of the rape of her mother. Although they were attracted to each other, she and Alex never got further than just friends.

So we come to the first story, Spark. Olivia reluctantly is on vacation in Italy. She rarely takes time off, but Stabler convinces her to go with her boyfriend, Mark. When she returns from Italy, Alex surprises her at the station, returning after more than 2 years in witness protection.

Around her the air seemed to spark, alive with electricity. “Hey” a voice said behind her, and Olivia froze...
For more than two years she’d folded up her affection for Alex until it was so small, it seemed invisible…” 

From here the romance speeds up at breakneck speed. The attraction is off the charts. Both of them are not willing to take a chance of losing each other again. The rest of the story of how they begin this new relationship, Olivia breaking up with her boyfriend, meeting Alex’s mother and dealing with Alex’s PTSD from the shooting.
