Chi's Sweet Home 01 by Kanata Konami is about a little kitten and the family who adopts her when she is separated from her mother and siblings. I read the book because we recently took in a stray kitten and I was looking for something different to read.

I normally shy away from stories told from the point of view of an animal because most authors can't pull it off. Konami is a rare exception. This mangaka gets cats both in terms of personality and in body language.

Although the artwork is amazingly cute it's also spot on. Anyone who has cared for a tiny kitten and watched it grow into cathood will recognize Chi's unstoppable enthusiasm.

The book isn't entirely about Chi, though. It's also about the human family who takes her in — a young couple and their potty training toddler. It's the toddler's misspeaking of the Japanese for pee that ends up giving the kitten her name. Just as Harriet ended being the one who instinctively knew how to pan train Tortuga, so does this toddler.

To add drama to the series, Chi is taken in by a family who isn't allowed to have cats. Of course there's rumor of a giant black cat also living in the building. But they are still wary of having Chi in their home. At one point, when Chi discovers the front window, they try to disguise her by filling the window sill with cute stuffed animals!

I recommend this series to anyone who has cats. My entire family: daughter, son, husband and I are all laughing our way through the manga series.

Volume 09 is currently nominated for a CYBILS in the middle grade graphic novel category.

Chi's Sweet Home 02 by Kanata Konami continues on with these short comedic episodes about Chi and her new family adjusting.

Chi has been taken in by a family who lives in an apartment with a strict no pets policy. With the appearance of a large black cat, the super is on the prowl. This cat knows his way around and has claimed the entire apartment building as his own. Taken in by Chi's curiosity, he decides to show her some of his tricks.

Along with the near misses with the super, there's the more mundane but equally hilarious parts of owning a cat. Specifically, there's a trip to the vet which includes such fun things like trying to get Chi into a basket, the scary car ride and the actual vet visit.

The Chi books are best suited for anyone who has owned (or been owned by) a cat. The pictures are adorable and the language is easy enough that my first grader can read them. There's also an anime series.

Chi moves into her new home. She realizes climbing down stairs isn't as fun as climbing up. She meets Alice and David. She wins (and loses) at hide and seek. But she also misses Blackie.

The Bear Cat "Blackie" is found out and his owner evicted. Chi's family realizes their time is up too. Fortunately a new pet friendly apartment has opened.

Chi sees her Mom again and learns her way around the neighborhood.

Chi's Sweet Home is adorable and funny. Sometimes it's a tad sad like when Chi tries to remember her mom or when she gets lost, but most of the time it's just cute and sweet. Chi being angry is so adorable! This is the sort of manga you read when you just need to feel good, and it works!

A very cute series. The life of a kitten.

Chi is a mischievous newborn kitten who, while on a leisurely stroll with her family, found herself lost. Rescued by a young boy named Yohei and his mother, Chi was quickly and quietly whisked away into the warm and inviting Yamada family apartment... Where pets are strictly prohibited. While the family never intended to keep the kitten, Chi has slowly clawed her way in to the family, winning over everyone with her kitten idiocy and charm.

I loved this series from start to finish! It always put a smile on my face. Chi is just so cute! The author really captured true kitten behaviour. So glad I got over myself a bit and allowed myself to read a kids book about cats! I’m off to check out the anime now!
