okay so i got this arc on independent bookstore day and immediately started it because as a chloe gong fan i've been salivating at the thought of a new book (i know vilest things just came out but i haven't gotten to it yet sorry!) and a cyberpunk dystopian one at that

this book throws a lot of info at you, as is par for the course with any sci-fi/fantasy book, but it never babies you. you're given the information in a very succint and digestible way and i didn't feel overwhelmed about it like immortal longings made me feel. i definitely see the improvements in chloe's writing since these violent delights and i'm excited that her author voice is growing like this. 

at times i forgot this was a trilogy and was thinking there's no way we get all the answers by the end but then remembered there's still two more books for all of that. and, not to brag, but i did guess the third act mic drop moment. not something i'm upset about because the clues were there, but i think it's a testament to chloe's writing that i didn't feel let down that i guessed it because she still made it feel as mic drop-ish as she wanted it. and, to be fair, i didn't guess EVERY single thing about it, just some of the basics.

overall, coldwire definitely is ushering in a new era of chloe gong as she departs from shakespeare at least in her young adult writings and i'm very excited about it!!!
