“Dar?” Hovering uncertainly, I turned back to find him already walking away. “I’ll see you after school, yeah?”

He didn’t turn back to look at me, either.

Instead, he pulled his hood up and kept walking away from me.

After spending a selfish amount of time contemplating taking a knife to my wrists, I clenched my eyes shut and locked every muscle in my body tight until my entire frame shook from the tension.

Slowly, as my mind resigned itself to the fact that there was no way I could leave three innocent children with the monsters that created us, I felt my muscles unlock, causing me to sink deeper into depression.

“He’s going to kill you, Mam,” I lashed out. “Don’t you get that? Can’t you hear me? You’re going to die in this house. If you don’t get away from him, you’re going to die here. I can feel it in my bones…” My voice cracked, and I choked back a sob, unwilling to shed tears. “Don’t you love yourself? Don’t you love me?”

“In what way?” I demanded, chest heaving. “In looks? Because if it’s in looks, then that’s not my fault. I can’t help who I look like, but I am nothing like that man in any other way.”

“You are,” she said before leaving the room. “In every way.”

And with those words, my mother cut me deeper and more viciously than my father ever had. Ever could. And it was right there in that moment that I knew deep in my bones it was the beginning of the end for me. The switch I had been so desperate not to flip these past few years had finally tripped.

“Fuck it,” I grumbled to myself, “you’re going to die young anyway, might as well put an expedited stamp on your forehead.”

Nothing made sense anymore. It felt like everyone was out to get me. I couldn’t trust a goddamn soul, that was for sure. Help wasn’t available for people like us, with families like ours. We were fucked, royally screwed, and I was too broken to keep these kids alive any longer. Not when I wanted to die.

“I’m trying,” he bit out. “It’s your ass.”

“If you s-say that m-my ass is f-fat, I’m g-going to s-scream.”

“Your ass is perfect.” Reaching up to grease his hands with washing-up liquid from his hair, he tried and failed to unwedge my hips. “It’s this goddamn sink that’s the problem.”

“Please just stay.” He paused to release another slow breath before continuing. “This is the only time it’s ever stopped. Please don’t break it.”

“This is the only time what’s ever stopped?” I croaked out, feeling my heart thunder wildly in my chest. “And don’t break what?”

“My head,” he mumbled, before adding, “The quiet.”

Them getting tattoos for each other while being drunk is so on brand for them lmao

“Oh yeah, I forgot,” she shot back with a grin. “You’re my bitch.”
