I wasn’t expecting this thriller to have such a strong feminism dialogue in it. Very cool 

Read in Portugal, but no sense of place or atmosphere. Poorly written and I guessed every plot twist well in advance.

this book was a ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ until the last 20 pages............

I’m incredibly confused and was for most of this book. i liked it, i think it could have been 100 pages shorter but not a big deal. crazy twists and turns, unfortunately very realistic. i found the main character reallyyy annoying too

I was so excited to read this book, where most of the action happens in Lisbon, my city. Boy, was I disappointed! In an American perspective I guess its interesting, but in a Portuguese perspective I have so many things to say, and not good ones.

1st - did the author bother to understand how the Portuguese authorities are organised? A kidnapping like the one in the book is investigated by the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) , and then we have the Public Security Police (PSP). Which one is the author referring to?
If you enter a police station (PSP) you don't find an American police station like is described in the book. The PSP agents wear a uniform and the PJ agents usually don't. The Portuguese police don't work with dirty clothes or uniform like it's stated. Also Portuguese police in Lisbon (PSP and PJ) speak English, not the weird broken English that detectives Moniz and Santos speak. 

2nd - Ariel wonders where to find an English speaking notary in Lisbon on the 4rd of July. Well... Almost EVERYWHERE! Most notaries speak English and, since the 4rd of July isn't a holiday in Portugal, they are open. 

3rd - if you ask to go to Teatro Nacional the taxi driver will ask Teatro Nacional Dona Maria or Teatro Nacional de São Carlos. 

4rd - it's not Joao it's João. And Tomas is also wrong, it's Tomás. 

5th - we address female English speaking tourists as miss or Mrs, not senhora. 

6th - there's no security cameras in Lisbon. Some stores have it, mostly inside the store. So Lucy wouldn't be habble to disable any security cameras without committing breaking and entering. 

And I could go on, the author made so many mistakes and frankly he just americanised Lisbon and Portuguese authorities. Yes I know this is fiction, but if the author mentions so many real details about Lisbon, when I read things as a notary being closed because of the 4rd of July it bothers me. The world isn't the USA, each country has it's own identity that should be well characterised. 

On a good note, the author describes well (most of the times) the streets that Ariel walks while trying to save her husband and when she and John are running from the police. 

This could be a really great book, since the plot is very interesting and it's really easy to read because it's fast paced, there's no time to get bored. As I wrote, in an American perspective, you may not notice anything wrong, but as a Portuguese living in Lisbon the mistakes are annoying and I didn't DNF only because I really liked the story and all the twists.

What can women do when they feel powerless? A thriller of sorts that lays bare the hypocrisy and shallowness of the privileged class and powerful — such as all the money and time spent on one’s upkeep instead of on more meaningful pursuits. At 58% I was certain how this suspenseful novel would end. But I was wrong, and that made the experience even more enjoyable.

This started slow for me but then pulled me in. Unexpected in parts, unbelievable in others. The truth may take a while to appear but usually finds the light. A good change of pace book from my usual.
