The  really destructive feature of their relationship is it’s inherent quality of boredom.

The political moral is certainly depressing: these people could be made to believe in anybody or anything.

Christopher Isherwood had such an incredible awareness and fascination for people. I only dream of being able to describe, for example, a voiceless anti-fasc in a dive-bar to the depths he could. 

 is necessary, beyond anything. Not just politically, but socially. Humans are interesting and different and passionate and Isherwood does no disservice to any of the characters he’d stumbled across, whether they are the great Sally Bowles, a neurotic landlord, or a fat balding man chewing a cigar. 

It is hard to really sum up how I feel, particularly after the last twenty or so pages. But that’s exactly it, I suppose? What can you say or feel in response to a book on the rise of the Nazis that was published in 1939? Hopeless yet hopeful. Cold, yet Isherwood still smiled on his final morning walk in a Germany lost to Nazism.

A little too slow moving for my current mood, which made me feel disconnected from the characters. The most interesting bits were at the end, where the author puts in some of his actual diary entries from 1932-33 and which describe the small acts of public violence and hatred, and how ordinary citizens responded to them.

Set in the 1930s, Goodbye to Berlin evokes the glamour and sleaze, excess and repression of Berlin society. Isherwood shows the lives of people under threat from the rise of the Nazis: a wealthy Jewish heiress, Natalia Landauer, a gay couple, Peter and Otto, and an English upper-class waif, the divinely self-indulgent Sally Bowles.
