That was just... weird. The story starts with a young girl picking up two strange hitchhikers, and from there, everything starts getting allegorical and fantastical and (view spoiler)[vaguely religious. I think the best way of describing it is if David Lynch directed It's a Wonderful Life. There's a lot of strange plot points including heroin addiction, fortune tellers who live in castles, midnight Mass, teen suicide, and demon sex (seriously) (hide spoiler)] There were some pretty dark moments and it was overall quite depressing and strange. I'm not sure how I feel about this one, but it was memorable enough to get 3 stars.

Who let young me read this? Who was marketing this stuff to kids in the early 90’s? I remember begging my grandmother to buy me this book as a teen and her questioning it based on the cover, but letting me have it anyway. I remember binge reading it in a day and loving it yet feeling a little traumatized after the fact. I vividly remembered this book’s ending before I reread it. I think this book is where my love of thrillers and plot twists began. Older me actually still enjoyed this book. 5 stars because it was more than a nostalgic rereading. What I did not remember is some of the content. I’m sure little degenerate teenage me loved it though. But seriously, this is not a young YA book. It’s in the older realm of YA. Content warning ⚠️ Drugs, death, teen pregnancy, alcohol use, smoking, suicide (The 90’s didn’t give a fuck.)
