Beneath Black Sails A New Adult Pirate Fantasy

Clare Sager2020
Sometimes it takes a pirate to catch a pirate. With weather magic on her side, Lady Vice is the bane of the high seas, but she isn't captain of her own ship. Yet. If she can persuade her captain to give her a command, she'll be in charge of her own fate. To pay off his family's debts, Knigh Blackwood hunts pirates for the Royal Navy. And he's damn good at it. When the bounty on Lady Vice increases, he's determined to make her face justice, even if that means using unorthodox methods. Forced to work together, neither can deny their mutual attraction. As they face battles at sea and schemes aboard their ship, they discover hints about a long-lost treasure that could be the answer to both their problems. But treasure isn't the only thing buried. Secrets best forgotten lie in wait that could blast them apart. And the closer Vice and Knigh grow, the greater the threat - to her freedom and to his family. Because for one to succeed, the other must fail. If you love cunning heroes, feisty heroines, and enemies to lovers romance, you'll love this new adult fantasy series that's perfect for fans of Sarah J Maas and Miranda Honfleur. this was a fun book to read! definitely a quick read and far better than I anticipated! i love all things pirate and sea related. the relationship between knigh & vee is also one of my favorites! i really, really enjoyed knigh and I actually think he is the stronger character of the two. i don't typically like miscommunication tropes but this book actually did it well in my opinion, aside from the ending! however im definitely continuing the series. im hoping the plot begins to build a bit more. in terms of plot, there were definitely some weak points. it was a quick read, a little over 300 pages so I'm not necessarily surprised it was heavy on romance, and a bit weaker on the plot. the betrayal plot was good, but the ending was a bit weak. this is the first time in a series I am NOT on the female protag side of things. mostly, because the "miscommunication" was her fault so I'm interested to see how book 2 goes. I wish the author had tied in the secondary characters a bit more. the author attempted to set up a found family, but it felt very surface level so I'm hoping to see that further explored and developed in the next books. I also wished that more was explained regarding vee's previous life, especially since it's brought up so frequently. but I believe there's a novella about it so I might check that out. overall it was a fun, quick read! definitely continuing the series and I recommend if you're looking for something to get out of a slump!

Smiling, she lifted her hands to his face, tracing her fingers over the high cheekbones. “You are gorgeous, you know that, right?” His eyebrows shot up, and he blinked. “I—I—thank you?” She chuckled and pulled his mouth back to hers. Clearly, not enough women had said that. A travesty. Some felt ashamed of their bodies or hid them or compared them to others—too big, too small, too fleshy, too muscular for a woman, not enough curves. Not her. Just like the reef, bodies came in hundreds, thousands of different forms, and she’d never seen one that wasn’t beautiful. “What”—she half sat up, but his palm on her solar plexus stopped further movement—“ what are you doing?” “I thought the Pirate Queen would appreciate a man kneeling for her.” Chapter Thirty
