A middle grade graphic novel about Marlene, a young Afro-Dominican girl who stops straightening her hair and embraces her natural curls. Marlene loves three things: books, her cool Tía Ruby and hanging out with her best friend Camila. But according to her mother, Paola, the only thing she needs to focus on is school and “growing up.” Which means straightening her hair every weekend so she could have "presentable", "good hair". But Marlene hates being in the salon and doesn't understand why her curls are not considered pretty by those around her. But with a few hiccups, a dash of embarassment, and the much needed help of Camila and Tia Ruby—she slowly starts a journey to learn to appreciate and proudly wear her curly hair.

This book is so heartwarming and a very light read to help understand the concept of loving yourself while accepting your flaws. I cried a little near the end because it showed how beautiful the bond between a mom and daughter can be, and how important it is for them to have deep talks in order to truly understand each other. Family can sometimes be the source of insecurity because of the wrong things passed down by ancestors, but we all have our own ways to prove those things wrong. I love it. Also, the drawings and color tone really suit the vibe of this book. To all the curly girls out there: you’re beautiful, inside and out. <3

Amé esta nove gráfica, es muy tierna, divertida, hermosa y profunda. Creo que es un middle grade perfecto para todas las edades.
La historia se centra en una nena que trata de sentirse bien consigo misma, trata de buscar su propia identidad en medio de una sociedad imponente y llena de prejuicios. Como persona con cabello rizado pude sentirme totalmente identificada con ella, y como dominicana de nacimiento que soy, pude también sentir esos comentarios prejuiciosos que le hacia su familia. Me hubiese gustado tener este libro cuando era mas joven y decidí dejar a mi pelo ser libre en su propia textura.

Amé totalmente esta historia, creo que la autora supo darle un desarrollo magnifico y adecuado. Los personajes son maravillosos, sobre todo me encantó la personalidad de la tía jajaja. En fin, estoy deseando tener la copia en físico. Por cierto, las ilustraciones son INCREÍBLES, las amé.
