Clive Barker

Weaveworld

Clive Barker has made his mark on modern fiction by exposing all that is surreal and magical in the ordinary world --- and exploring the profound and overwhelming terror that results. With its volatile mix of the fantastical and the contemporary, the everyday and the otherworldly, Weaveworld is an epic work of dark fantasy and horror -- a tour de force from one of today's most forceful and imaginative artists.

This was on my mom's bookshelf when I was a kid. I read the first hundred pages or so before I was even in my teens.

Now in my forties I wanted to give it another go but the font was too small on the paperback copy I adopted from her.  I traded it in and grabbed a hardcover from a used bookshop and I'm glad I did.

This is a lot easier to digest than something like Imajica. If I was to give a Clive Barker recommendation and I knew the individual was not averse to longer books, this is the one I would pick.

This book has its flaws to be sure, but I love it. I love the mix of adventure, horror, magic, personal stories of love and loss combined with an epic tale of attempted genocide, and all the weird psychosexual aspects that make this book utterly compelling and (so far in my reading) unique. I've re-read it so many times since the first reading (when I was 14 or so), and I don't doubt I'll be reading it again in the near future.

A horrifying and spellbinding tale by the “great imaginer of our time” (Quentin Tarantino) and New York Times bestselling author Clive Barker about the magical world lying right beneath our feet. In a home of an elderly woman in Liverpool lies a carpet. Suzanna Parish is called to Liverpool after her grandmother has a stroke. Cal Mooney is on the run from an escaped homing pigeon. Together they find themselves accidently drawn into the strange world that lies beneath the mysterious rug. Here, a race of magical beings have hidden themselves from the normal world to escape human persecution and an evil known as the Scourge. But two other evils, a ruthless witch and her sidekick, seek the carpet for their own gain and will do whatever it takes to find it. As the intricate weavings of the tapestry come undone, Suzanna and Cal must face their biggest fears to save this discovered land and all its inhabitants. Brutal, beautiful, brilliant, and full of his original illustrations, Clive Barker spins his best in this “unhinged and indulgent” (Entertainment Weekly) imaginative tale.
