Along the way, they have many adventures, but the greatest adventure of all awaits them when they learn that the comet is headed straight for their beloved Moominvalley.

This is a re-read of a book I originally read in the 80's.

When I read this way back when, I thought it was actually kinda dark for a kid's book. There's a comet ("a star with a tail") heading for Moominland. It seems likely that it will strike their world and nothing will survive. The waters and seas all dry up too.

Moomintroll and Sniff and Snufkin head off to the astronomers on top of the mounting to find out what will happen and what they can do. Then they rush home.

I like these books because there are passages like this in them:
 Moomintroll thought how frightened the earth must be feeling with that great ball of fire oming nearer and nearer to her. Then he thought about how much he loved everything -- the forest and the sea, the rain and the wind, the sunshine, the grass and the moss -- and how impossible it would be to live without them all, and this made him feel very, very sad. But after a wile he stopped worrying.

"Mamma will know what to do," he said to himself. 

That simple faith that Mama Can Fix It isn't really something I ever had. I envy those who had it. And (spoiler, but not really) everything IS ok in the end.

All the little animals and really just delightfully weird too.

I remember that i loved watching the animated series so here i go now, twenty-three years old me is feeling like visiting the world of the moomins once again.

A comet is speeding towards Earth and nobody in Moominvalley knows what to do! Will it destroy everything and everyone? Moomintroll decides to find out. So, with Sniff, he sets off on an expedition to ask the Professor if a comet is really on its way to destroy the Earth. On their journey they meet some interesting people - such as Snufkin the super tramp, and the Hemulen who rescues them from an underground tunnel - and have narrow escapes from such menaces as crocodiles and giant lizards. And on their way back Moomintroll meets the beautiful Snork Maiden and is a changed Moomin for ever after. But what about the comet - and is the World Wiped Out?... Tove Jansson was born in Finland in 1914. She began her career as a cartoonist and went on to write and illustrate many books for adults and children. She drew her first Moomin in the 1930s, just for fun, and in 1945 he became a character in a children's story. Tove became world-famous for her Moomin books, which began with The Moomins and the Great Flood, Comet in Moominland and Finn Family Moomintroll. Tove Jansson received many prestigious awards during her lifetime, including the international Hans Christian Andersen Medal. She died in 2001, aged 87.
