a novella stringed from a single thought; where the narrator takes us back his fateful years, but with only one goal, which is to speak of, in his words, "what genuinely matters," for in his biography it's been buried. the story takes on a more concrete shape when thought of it this way, when we go back to the beginning, of why exactly we are being told the events of his youth; an accomplished life means no bearing in records if it doesn't reflect of whom you were the consequence of

zweig writes an obsessive, tumultuous relationship; he doesn't invite judgment, the characters do a good amount of it themselves. while some of his views are dated, and i have my own opinions of, possibly incongruent to his, it's wonderful to see how he handled shame. the central characters so terrifyingly avoided it, and in the end it couldn't be left behind but merely passed on, that while our now-grown narrator looks back at his life he finds, still, himself quivering in his youth: "Everything it says is true—only what genuinely matters is missing. [...] It speaks of me, but does not reveal what I am." if something is to be revealed, then it must first be hidden; this shame belongs to the both of them, and even in the narrator's old age he is still in a state of confusion, only made clear by remembering the period of his life that formed him, which was only prompted by a biography that aimed to sum his life up but couldn't: all because he himself has not entertained a callback to this brittle time period, for what? shame? the same one of the professor's?

wonderful introduction to zweig. he seems dizzying and so lost in his thoughts; perfect for me. excited to read more of him

There was a note in it such as I had never heard before and have never heard since, a note drawn from depths that the average life never plumbs എന്നാണ് പക്ഷെ റോളണ്ട് ചിന്തിയ്ക്കുന്നത്). അപ്പോഴും അയാൾ ഒരു ഉൾനാട്ടിൽ കൗമാരക്കാരായ വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളെ പഠിപ്പിയ്ക്കുന്നു എന്നതും റോളണ്ട് അയാൾ ഇങ്ങനെ കൊണ്ടുനടന്ന ആദ്യ വിദ്യാർത്ഥിയായിരിയ്ക്കില്ലല്ലോ എന്ന അസുഖകരമായ ചിന്തയും വായനക്കാരനുണ്ടാകും. ഏറെക്കുറെ അസുഖം പോലെയാണ് സ്വവർഗ്ഗാനുരാഗം ഇവിടെ അവതരിപ്പിയ്ക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്. ഇതൊന്നും എഴുത്തിന്റെ ശക്തിയെ കുറയ്ക്കുന്നില്ല എന്നത് വേറെ കാര്യം.
