A bag containing fifty thousand marks was mistakenly left in the hotel, ‘but the family were so relieved to have escaped the German clutches that they willingly left that money as their ransom’. Felix’s English valet Arthur Keeping remained at the hotel to make it look as if they were still there. He was interned for the duration of the war. To the Youssoupovs’ relief, the train finally crossed into Denmark and they proceeded to Copenhagen.
