Crown of Midnight Throne of Glass #2

2013
"A line that should never be crossed is about to be breached. It puts this entire castle in jeopardy—and the life of your friend." From the throne of glass rules a king with a fist of iron and a soul as black as pitch. Assassin Celaena Sardothien won a brutal contest to become his Champion. Yet Celaena is far from loyal to the crown. She hides her secret vigilantly; she knows that the man she serves is bent on evil. Keeping up the deadly charade becomes increasingly difficult when Celaena realizes she is not the only one seeking justice. As she tries to untangle the mysteries buried deep within the glass castle, her closest relationships suffer. It seems no one is above questioning her allegiances—not the Crown Prince Dorian; not Chaol, the Captain of the Guard; not even her best friend, Nehemia, a foreign princess with a rebel heart. Then one terrible night, the secrets they have all been keeping lead to an unspeakable tragedy. As Celaena's world shatters, she will be forced to give up the very thing most precious to her and decide once and for all where her true loyalties lie... and whom she is ultimately willing to fight for.

i already read the series 5 years ago and i’m so glad i didn’t remember anything (except the major plot twists obviously), because it felt like reading it for the first time again.

the story is so simple, yet so captivating and the magic system is so well thought out.

it broke my heart how the first part was basically assassin‘s blade AGAIN…

Loved this book! The mix of semi-politics and magic have me fully hooked, can’t wait to start the next one. I found that I sort of connected Celaena to the missing princess fairly early so the last page shock wasn’t very shocking but her being fae definitely caught me off guard!

I'm shocked. Why is open communication so difficult, and why do men feel compelled to dictate women's fates for their supposed good? What the hell! What will she do now? And for the love of god Celeane grow up a little! Next book, please!

For personal reasons, this book really frustrated me, because I have a huge man crush on Chaol, and they really tried to bring a homie down. Half a star deducted for that. Otherwise, fantastic book. Absolutely loving this series.

Thrilling. Shocking. Exciting. Magical. Chefs kiss.

I was gasping by the end, as i’m sure we all were. I cannot wait to untangle the mess of Celeana/Aelin and the multiverse beyond Erelia.

Due to some not-so-great life events, I stopped reading when I was about a quarter of the way finished with this book. However, I am really glad I finished it. However, because it ended up being around 6 months between my reads, there are some aspects of the plot that I need a refresher in.

I enjoyed how the story progressed, and was heartbroken about Nehemia. Her relationship with Celena was special, and I loved reading about a strong female bond in an SJM book. I also appreciate how Celena is developing, and I appreciate that we get to see her grieve in this book. I can’t wait to know more about her as Aelin.

I also enjoyed learning about her fae heritage. I guess I wish that it was brought up in the story sooner, however I guess I understand why it wasn’t. I’m very excited to read Heir of Fire. Hopefully I will be able to read more often this time.

I just finished the book, and o. My. God. The ending had me stunned.

While the first half of the book wasn't as action filled as I anticipated, it was still very good, well-written, and was a beautiful base for all the important plot points later on in the book.

Super exited to binge read Heir of Fire now!

2/3 of this book was a bit of a slog to get through. Not a lot happened until BAM, everything was happening. Overall I liked it, but it felt a bit filler-ish combined with being a set-up for the rest of the series. The reveal was fun, though.

Honestly this could’ve been rated higher had it not been for the first half of the book!! I felt like it started off so slowly. Things were being discovered but never fully explored. But when you reached the half mark of this book it’s like everything explodes all at once! So much action and mystery I loved it. THAT ENDING THOUGH UGH I KNEW IT 🩵

Celaena didn’t know when she began crying…But then a warm, calloused hand grasped hers beneath the table, and she turned her head to find Chaol looking at her. He smiled slightly—and she knew he understood. So Celaena looked at her Captain of the Guard and smiled back.

He shook his head, as if silently chiding himself. "Did Sam love you?”

Yes. More than anyone had ever loved her. He’d loved her enough risk everything—to give up everything. He'd loved her so much that she still felt the echoes of it, even now. “Very much,” she breathed.

"I've only heard my clients whispering about it, every now and then. But there's a group that's formed, right here in Rifthold, and they want to put Aelin Galathynius back on Terrasen's throne."

Her heart stopped beating. Aelin Galathynius, the lost heir of Terrasen.

"Aelin Galathynius is dead," she breathed.

Archer shook his head. "They don't think so. They say she's alive, and that she's raising an army against the king. She's looking to reestablish her court, to find what's left of King Orlon's inner circle."

Three matching rings; three black rings to signify- what? That they were bound in some way to each other? How had Roland gotten past his father's and Perrington's defenses so quickly?

Aelin Galathynius, heir to the throne of Terrasen, died today, or sometime in the night. Before help could reach her deceased parents’ estate, the assassin who had missed her the night before returned. Her body has still not been found, though some believe it was thrown into the river behind her parents’ house.

This morning, King Orlon Galathynius, his nephew and heir, Rhoe Galathynius, and Rhoe’s wife, Evalin, were found assassinated. Orlon was murdered in his bed at the royal palace in Orynth, and Rhoe and Evalin were found dead in their beds at their country estate along the River Florine. There is no word yet about the fate of Rhoe and Evalin’s daughter, Aelin.

Chaol didn’t understand what she’d told him, the words she’d whispered in his ear. It was a date. Not even a year attached to it. A month and a day—a date that had passed weeks and weeks ago. It was the day that Celaena had left the city. The day she had snapped at Endovier a year before. The day her parents had died.

Chaol took one step toward her, though. One step, then he said, “I love you.” She strangled the sob that built in her throat. “I’m sorry,” she said, hoping he would remember those words later—later, when he knew everything.

And then she did the most reckless thing she’d ever done in her life. She stood on her toes and whispered the words into his ear. The words that would make him understand, understand why it was so important to her, and what it meant when she said she would return. And he would hate her forever for it, once he understood.

“I’ll come back,” she said quietly. “I’ll come back for you.” And he knew that there was more that she wasn’t saying, some bigger meaning behind those words. But Dorian still believed her.

Dorian, however, was watching the captain with barely concealed surprise. Clearly, Westfall hadn’t thought Dorian would support his decision. If only Westfall had been his heir instead; his warrior’s mind was sharp, and he didn’t balk from doing what needed to be done. The prince had yet to learn that kind of ruthlessness.

Whatever shred of hope he’d had for a future with her was gone. She still felt something for him, she’d admitted, but she would never trust him. She would always hate him for what he’d done.
