i read this book in a single day. it was both light-hearted and serious, featuring a cast of incredibly unique characters, including a queer vietnamese girl, a heroin addict, an excitable little boy, and a spacey girl in an abusive relationship. the main character was written as a selfish asshole who believed he was the hero, and while that annoyed me at times, it was satisfying when other characters called him out and when he finally started to change at the end. i found myself smiling every time i caught one of the video game references. this novel might not be as interesting if you're not big into video games, since some of the references might be lost on you, but the story holds up well on its own nonetheless. (it also speaks positively on social justice and issues with our society.)
