"A Fire on the Sea is a vivid adventure story set a hundred years in the future on the north Pacific coast. The book weaves realistic settings and believable characters into a story with fantastic elements that include renewal of native traditions, travel by sailing ship and communication with whales. Three young people who have grown ip in the coastal village of Ucluth must work together to overcome the growing power of the Priests before they take over their village. Miria, the Whale King's daughter, Robin, from the house of the Whale King, and Jomie, an orphan from the House of the Fisherman, decide to make a journey to the ruins of the City to return with new knowlegde. To do this, they will travel with the Sea People, the ocean-going matriarchal culture that has re-established trade on the coast. But after Jomie is stabbed by a henchman of the Priests, Robin and Miria must flee. Robin is thrown overboard from the ship on which he is traveling and must use all of his wits to survive as he makes his way south to the Bay of Oaks to warn Miria." - description from cover.
