A story taking place during the latter half of the seventeenth century follows the lives of seven men from a Dutch colony at the Cape of Good Hope, each of whom finds their lives defined by Pieternella, a beautiful daughter of the new colony's first mixed marriage, whose life reflects the impact of colonization on the Hottentot aborigines.
