Gentle and Lowly

for those not in Christ, this life is the best it will ever get. for those in Christ, for whom Ephesians 2:7 is the Eternal Vista just around the next bend in the road, this life is the worst it will ever get.

“I have read no book that more carefully, thoroughly, and tenderly displays Christ’s heart.” —Paul David Tripp, President, Paul Tripp Ministries; author, New Morning Mercies and My Heart Cries Out Christians know what Jesus Christ has done—but who is he? What is his deepest heart for his people, weary and faltering on their journey toward heaven? Jesus said he is “gentle and lowly in heart.” This book reflects on these words, opening up a neglected yet central truth about who he is for sinners and sufferers today.

The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers

This book aims to identify the heart of Christ to readers — gentle, lowly, slow to anger… it was an interesting read but Thomas Goodwin was quoted so much at the start that I thought it would be better off for me to read Thomas Goodwin’s book(s) instead. However, things picked up after a few chapters and I started to appreciate the author’s work. I didn’t really fancy the modern analogies though (I vaguely recall one about the hypothetical scenario of Jesus having a social media page or something along that line) — it’s just a personal preference.

How does Jesus feel about his people amid all their sins and failures? This book takes readers into the depths of Christ's very heart--a heart of tender love drawn to sinners and sufferers.

I first heard about this book when my pastor recommended it and read a Bunyan quote from it. Since my pastor is constantly pointing us to Jesus, I knew it must be worthwhile.

This book is neither mild nor imbalanced. All it does is reveal what the Scripture actually says about who Jesus is- what Jesus and God the Father have to say about who they are and what their heart is toward us- and reorients us back to the truth, stripping away our preconceived ideas of who we think God is or should be.

I love how much of this book references and quotes Puritan writings. These are not new or progressive ideas.

It's the type of book that changes you, because the gospel changes you. It helps us see where we've gone wrong in our thinking, see Jesus more clearly, and love Him more.

I highly recommend this book.
