Isaac’s Song

Just like with “Don’t Cry For Me”, I love how honest this book is. Being queer in a Black family is no easy feat, and this story somehow captures most aspects of it tactfully. At times, it felt too preachy to me, as if it was meant to teach others about this experience as opposed to reaching out to those who have lived this life. While I’m sure that’s helpful for others, I would love to have dug deeper into some of the themes discussed. I don’t mean this in the negative way I usually do, but it felt YA adjacent. The prose is beautiful but still simple and easily digestible. I loved being able to see Isaac’s versions of events and how he’s internalized them after reading his father’s perspective in the other connected story.
