The author compare plant's senses with human's. This whole idea is flawned: plants are not humans. Again, another attempt to anthropomorphize living creature. Plants to not sense the world as we do, they don't have memory as we do (despite what's in the book, which is common to most living creature and has nothing to do with memory). They cannot smell, they can just sense specific compuound, which is more similar to the concept of pheromone than small. And so on.
