everything is re-edited; you know you heard it in the overture but you still didn't expect it in the finale.

Our story begins in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where, the guidebooks would have it, "geography demanded a city." As if rich river- soaked land wanted nothing better than a bunch of greyed-out buildings dumped on it

this book was, honestly, bizarre. i don't know if i could ever recommend it to anyone, but i don't regret reading it. i was surprised to discover that it was written after The Basic Eight, and not before. the form is ambitious and creative, the themes strange and unsettling. as another reviewer has already said, i don't know how i feel about this book.

3 stars because I honestly have no idea how I feel about this book. I don't know what the hell happened and whether it was good or not. I might reread it in the future since I own it.
