Donut's father has died and her aunts come from Boston to stay with her. But they really want to bring her back to Boston with them and Donut does not want that. She likes her small town, her odd friends, being near the memory of her father. So she runs away. Will everything work out in the end. This would be a good read for upper elementary and middle school readers.

12 year old Donut, grieving the death of her father and worried her aunts will take her away from her beloved small Vermont town to a school in Boston, plots to run away. While the plot of the book is thin, the book is primarily an exploration of grief and grieving. Donut was a believable and relateable character, and her close relationships with the people in her town--particularly her gentle best friend Tiny, who isn't tiny in the least--make the reader understand her desire to stay. Despite its short length, the book is a bit of a slow read. Long descriptions of taxidermy slow the book down, and the book is cluttered with several characters. I personally found the character's names to be a bit distracting, too. While naming characters things like Donut, Tiny, and Pops provides a sense of atmosphere, the names came across precious to the point of twee to me.
