Idk y but I didn't like this as much as the first book. Perhaps it's because the intrigue and mission came to a close and also that the protagonist is a bit too head strong for my liking. However I did like her way of thinking in the first book. Idk....

           Oh I didn't think this could get worse than the first book... but here we are. I'm going to keep this short this time.

Plot: I would say that the concept is much better than the first book (imo) but the execution could've been better. It just felt really rushed with almost nothing happening and then a really climatic part and. Also, the actions some of these characters carry out are so nonsensical (like Alosa's mother just running away after being imprisoned for years) and it just makes me hard to believe the story when I'm constantly going... why would they do that?

Characters: Justice for the side characters please!!! They were constantly just brushed over by some mentioning from Alosa. Speaking of Alosa, her and Riden were pretty much the same as in the first book, no major development there.

Pacing: it was very quick paced yet some parts did feel like they dragged out a bit.

World: we did get more world building (yay!) but not nearly as much as I'd hoped for. I think this is the main reason why I didn't enjoy the books as much as I'd hoped I would. For me, world building is what makes the book immersive (especially for a fantasy) and it could really add to the depth to the story, even more so since you rarely hear about pirate-themed books but there was a lack of pirateness 🫠

Overall, this duology was not the duology for me but thousands clearly love it! I would say give it a try but don't go in expecting a fantastical fantasy with emphasis on the pirate aspect (it is very much a romance).

I liked the book but not as much as the first one in my opinion. There was a lot of things that felt repetitive and I know they are on a ship there’s not a lot to do. So it’s hard to rate it with this particular setting. I think Alosa and Riden were really good in this book but their relationship in the first book was way more entertaining because of the enemies to lovers. I do think it was forgotten why Riden stayed on the ship by the time the book was over but wasn’t a main thing either. I didn’t really like it being a pirate ship and Alosa being the captain but her crew argues with her. That just didn’t make Alosa seems so important and invisible like she is built to be either. It was a good book just for me the first one was better.

Pulse pounding sequel to The Daughter of the Pirate King! The action is pretty non stop as Alosa and her crew find themselves in a race against the pirate king after she realizes her father’s not the man she thought he was. I’m really on a whole pirate kick at the moment, but I am really enjoying Alosa and her kick ass female crew.

The world building was much better than in the first book and i enjoyed every second of it and loved it.

If you have not read Daughter of the Pirate King yet, I would advise against reading anything about the sequel including the publisher's description of Daughter of the Siren Queen as it contains spoilers for the first book!*

Daughter of the Siren Queen is the first of several sequels coming out in 2018 that I was excited about. I was pleasantly surprised by Levenseller's debut novel last year. There aren't enough witty, swashbuckling adventures out there! While I did have a few minor quips with the first book, I still consider it impressive for a debut. 

The story picks up not too long after the first book left off. Alosa has recovered all three sections of the map to the legendary treasure and the race is on. I won't give away more than that other than there are elements that put more than treasure on the line. The story excels at capturing that sense of grand adventure. And it has the elements needed to liven up any epic escapade: treasure maps, sirens, kidnapping, cannibals, sword fights, ship battles, and more. Speaking of the ships, the author found a good balance of inserting enough accurate nautical terminology without bogging down the story for the average landlubber. 

I liked Alosa even more in this book. And it was great that you get to know the rest of her crew better in this installment. I had high expectations for her crew. And her band of almost all females greatly succeed at showing off their various talents for butt kicking awesomeness. There are no damsels in distress here!

(view spoiler)[I was worried with the way Daughter of the Pirate King ended that the romance angle in the sequel might get a little stale. But not surprisingly, Alosa got spooked by the thought of trust and commitment and tries to keep Riden at a distance. This allowed the romantic tension to stay at an interesting level and not fall into lovey-dovey territory. And in both books, I appreciated that Alosa is the more forceful personality in the relationship. Riden has a good balance of being compassionate and loyal while not being emasculated just because he cares for a strong woman. I enjoyed reading a romance that did not follow the typical (boring) damsel in distress recused by meathead hero plot. (hide spoiler)] 

There is some violence. It's impossible to have a pirate story without it. You couldn't have believable stakes if swords and cannonballs didn't have deadly consequences. But it is not too gory although the violence is there. 

It is also worth mentioning that I like how duologies are gaining ground particularly in YA. Trilogies have been the dominant formula for too long. Duologies are great because they allow for more exploration of the characters and world than a standalone does. But they don't have to suffer the doldrums of Middle Book Syndrome the way most trilogies do. And they don't come with the exhausting commitment that goes hand in hand with longer, drawn-out series. So I definitely can cheer for the uptick in duologies.

I am delighted that Daughter of the Siren Queen lived up to my expectations. It was a wonderful, witty adventure. Keep them coming, Levenseller! Bring me that horizon!

4⭐️. This story picks up 2 months after Daughter of the Pirate King ends. Alosa is in search of the 3rd missing piece of the map to Isla de Canta and now has Riden and Draxen aboard her ship as captives. We get more witty banter between Riden and Alosa. Alosa's journey of finding her place in the world develops so much more in this book. The story is more fast paced and has more action type scenes. I loved the found-family trope as well as the enemies-to-lovers. This was a great conclusion to the duology.

The second book of this duology is once again about our beloved main character Alosa. This time she and her crew of female pirates travel the sea to find out more about Alosa’s heritage as well as a giant mystery considering exactly that. 

Sirens and pirates, love and lust (sadly without too much 🌶spice🌶), enemies to lovers and it’s romantasy? I was instantly sold with this duology and I do not regret one thing. This book was so much fun to read! It’s a quick and easy read and although the writing style sometimes gave me a “fanfictionous vibe”, I really enjoyed this book. I would have loved another part to this, but I don’t think there will be, considering the end of this book - but I still am hoping for it!
All in all I would really recommend this to anyone who is interested in a “Pirates of the Caribbean” meets love story, meets great plot experience!
