This two-volume reference presents not only the events between 1939 and 1945, but also the events leading up to the formal start of the war, the underlying causes, and some of the consequences and results. The 1,400 entries are divided into six sections, each arranged alphabetically. Special features include implicit recognition of the Soviet Union's importance as well as the role of women. Volume I discusses social and political issues and events, leaders and individuals, and units and organizations.
