... everything around here was so alive and tender, the dirty street, the old trams, orange peels ⎯ strength flowed back and forth through her heart in weighty abundance. She was very pretty just then, so elegant; in step with her time and the city where she'd been born as if she had chosen it.

No one but me can love you, thought the woman laughing through her eyes; and the weight of that responsibility left the taste of blood in her mouth. As if 'mother and daughter' were life and abhorrence.

She lay still in bed, peaceful, improvised. She loved... In advance she loved the man she'd one day love. Who knows, it sometimes happened, and without guilt or any harm done to either of the two. In bed thinking, thinking, about to laugh as a bit of gossip. Thinking, thinking. What? Well, what did she know. That's how she let herself go on.

First Clarice Lispector read! She has such a way with words.

this is my first clarice lispector, but it won't be my last.

these 3 short stories as an introduction to her works only makes me intrigued to read more from her. although, i feel these stories are confusing to me at most. i feel like i didnt truly understand the underlining meaning, maybe if i give this a read in 2-3 years i'll grow to understand it more. i thoroughly enjoyed the short stories as time went on reading them, family ties is my favorite out of the three.

she manages to make the simplest things, like brushing your hair, into these wonderfully magical moments, which really made the book. There is not a lot of plot in any of the stories, but still so much happening and bubbling under the surface. love love love

i think my fav was the first story

"If she wanted she could pour even more wine into her glass and, protected by the position she'd achieved in life, get even drunker as long as she didn't lose her pride. And like that, drunker still."

this is my first clarice lispector read and it did not disappoint! i love how hilarious and just so relatable she is when she writes.

her writing is raw and unsettling, like she’s pulling apart the seams of everyday life. she takes the mundane and makes it profound, layering simple moments with emotions and meanings you didn’t expect. it’s less about the story and more about the way it makes you feel.
