Dead Voices

New York Times bestselling author Katherine Arden returns with another creepy, spine-tingling adventure in this follow-up to the critically acclaimed Small Spaces. Having survived sinister scarecrows and the malevolent smiling man in Small Spaces, newly minted best friends Ollie, Coco, and Brian are ready to spend a relaxing winter break skiing together with their parents at Mount Hemlock Resort. But when a snowstorm sets in, causing the power to flicker out and the cold to creep closer and closer, the three are forced to settle for hot chocolate and board games by the fire. Ollie, Coco, and Brian are determined to make the best of being snowed in, but odd things keep happening. Coco is convinced she has seen a ghost, and Ollie is having nightmares about frostbitten girls pleading for help. Then Mr. Voland, a mysterious ghost hunter, arrives in the midst of the storm to investigate the hauntings at Hemlock Lodge. Ollie, Coco, and Brian want to trust him, but Ollie's watch, which once saved them from the smiling man, has a new cautionary message: BEWARE. With Mr. Voland's help, Ollie, Coco, and Brian reach out to the dead voices at Mount Hemlock. Maybe the ghosts need their help--or maybe not all ghosts can or should be trusted. Dead Voices is a terrifying follow-up to Small Spaces with thrills and chills galore and the captive foreboding of a classic ghost story.

Dead Voices by Katherine Arden is the sequel to Small Spaces (2018). It reads like a middle grade mashup of The Shining (1977) and Kingdom Hospital (2004) but written for middle graders. It's winter break and Ollie, Coco, and Brian are now best friends. It also looks like Ollie's dad and Coco's mother have started dating. Now with free tickets to a new ski resort at Hemlock Mountain, the three friends and Ollie's dad and Coco's mom are driving through a blizzard for the scariest and most dangerous weekend they've ever faced. 99CCCC - S/M uhoria maze http://pussreboots.com/blog/2019/comm...

I LOVED this book! As soon as I was able to get my hands on a copy I devoured it! I absolutely loved Katherine Arden's debut middle grade novel, the first in this series, Small Spaces. I discovered today that there are going to be two more books in this series and I can't wait to read them. I would recommend not reading this one unless you've read Small Spaces first. This story is perfect for winter because the setting is during a snow storm at a remote ski lodge. There have been some disappearances and this ski lodge may or may not be haunted. It has an interesting history. I simply adore these characters and I love Katherine Arden's writing. It's so atmospheric and the reader feels like they are living inside the story. Also, this book really made me want to eat a S'more. I loved the friendship and family dynamics presented in this book. I love Ollie's connection to her mom. The idea that someone may be gone but they are never forgotten. I love the relationship that Ollie has with her dad. Even though it has some creepy elements, it is such a feel-good story. Needless to say, I loved this book from beginning to end. I read this within a day and I didn't want it to end. It was such a delight to read. I read it partly at a coffee shop (Starbucks) while enjoying a Chestnut Praline Latte and it was such a perfect pairing. The remainder of my reading time occurred at home under a cozy blanket, with a fireplace going, and sitting next to my Christmas tree. It was the coziest reading time and this book is just perfection. I can't wait to see what Ollie, Coco, and Brian get into next. If you haven't read this series yet, please do yourself a favor and pick it up. This series got me jump-started back into middle grade and it has been a great time!

This was a great continuation of this middle grade horror series! There were moments that sent shivers up my spine, which is rare in a middle grade! I love how Katherine Arden writes atmosphere. She can set a very creepy tone and it was absolutely perfect in this one! I also loved the growth of Coco in this story. I can’t wait to continue the series!

I’m telling you, pure delight.

this book just like Small Spaces was very very very terrifying. I love the writing style and the way Katherine tells the story with so much emotion and such carefully formed character relationships this set in the winter time not chirstmas really just winter. But reading it in the fall time is just as good. A ghost story to make you sleep with the lights on with the same characters as last book you see their adventure of a family fun weekend ture into a scary and thrilling book! if i were you i would read this book with a hot cup of coffee or tea, lots of blankets and some free hours because you are not going to want to put it down.

I really did wind up enjoying this book. I wound up listening to the audiobook and found it to be super fast pace read. I really did love the setting in the book and also the winter setting in this book. I felt that because this a second book in the series, I felt much more connected to the characters and the plot in this read. I really enjoyed how the parents had much more active role in this book and this book had some really creepy and eerie elements, I would rec this as a fall read for sure. This book def was more my style over book one and I really enjoyed the winter themed setting and will be really exited to dive into the other books in this series as well.

I loved this book so much!! I love how we have Coco's POV, as well as Olli's I, hope in the next book we get Brian's! The atmosphere was incredible. Katherine Arden is amazing at making her atmosphere. I really felt like I was in there with the characters. The characters are everything! I absolutely adore them! Coco is so precious. Olli is very smart but I loved how in this book Coco helped a lot more and we got to see how clever she is. This book was creepier than Small Spaces! I loved the ghost girls on the other side of the mirror! I had chills throughout this entire book! Definitely a perfect series for the spooky season! I'm so excited (and terrified) of what The Smiling Man will do next! I loved how Katherine Arden incorporated their dreams into the story I thought it was just a great spooky edition to the story! Definitely recommend to anyone who wants a spooky fun middle-grade series!!!

This was super creepy, maybe reading it mostly at night was not a good plan lol. The gang from book 1 is back and I really like the set up. I also liked that we focused a little more on Coco this time and the way they all work together was nice to see. A couple of things were left unexplored in this book but I'm wondering if we'll see further development on those in the next book. Overall another solid 4.5 star read.
