This might be, in my opinion, Vonnegut's most under-rated work. He turns a magnifying glass on a small Midwestern American city and creates a stirring portrait of characters whose lives are tightly intertwined, their tragedies echoing and rebounding off of each others' tragedies, rippling endlessly and so on. The interconnectivity of suburban life, its boredom and excess, are all presented her in a tragicomic fashion that is quintessentially Vonnegut. Never has death on such a grand scale been so absurdly hilarious.

First Vonnegut book I ever read in high school and keep coming back to, I picked up a couple of his others I haven't read yet and still somehow got to this one (again) first. Pretty standard vonnegut stuff, extremely funny, but what sticks out a lot to me is his idea of being a "neuter" - totally sexless and blank, almost asexual in modern day terms but it's definitely not an orientation innate to him as much as it's something that's happened to him. It's more of a traumatic response and him totally retreating from major aspects of life for fear of disappointment or harm. He's impotent and bleak. Short book, read this copy for the last time, the glue on the spine is totally fucked and pages keep falling out everywhere since it's a vintage print, RIP sleep well king

Rudolf Waltz's principal objection to life was that it was too easy to make horrible mistakes. He was himself to become a double-murderer at the age of twelve - on Mother's Day. This would at least make subsequent mistakes seem fairly trivial. Rudolf's father, Otto Waltz, had in 1910 bought a painting in Vienna from a destitute Adolf Hitler, thereby possibly saving him from starvation for a future generation. He made the further mistake of setting himself up as an artist when he returned from Europe to Midland City, Ohio, where everyone knew Otto couldn't draw for sour apples. He had funds to indulge this grand illusion (in the splendor of a vast converted 'medieval granary' studio, reminiscent of Mount Fujiyama) because his father had made a fortune producing an opium-and-cocaine-laced quack medicine called Saint Elmo's Remedy, popularly known to be 'absolutely harmless unless discontinued'. The Waltz inheritance even stretched to a troupe of black servants, which was just as well since Rudy's mother was as disinclined to look after a home as his 'artist' father was to paint.
