This was an interest read. I was initially surprised at how fast-paced it was at the beginning, but began to like how we instantly jump into the meat of the story. This story follows Ganta after he survives a massacre and his framed for killing his friends and classmates. He gets sent to Deadman Wonderland, an amusement park prison where the prisoners perform in games and shows that are deadly. This first instalment introduced the key concepts while giving a surface level introduction into the main players and characters. I liked Ganta as a protagonist and loved how he started out as a cowardly kid and became more heroic at the end. I liked how kind he was despite being scared. I liked how he chose to be loyal to his new friends instead of focusing on his survival at the end. My favourite part is when he chose to save someone over saving himself, and how he didn’t regret that decision. He showed a lot of heart for a manga protagonist in a first issue. I thought the secondary characters and the setting were interesting despite only getting a surface level introduction to both. I liked the dystopian setting and seeing how the “amusement prison” functioned, and it was interesting seeing it from an audience and civilian perspective too. I’m very curious about the backstories of the secondary cast and I’m very interested in learning about the motivations and identity of the Red Man, as well as learn what he did to Ganta in the beginning and the source of Ganta’s new abilities.

*3.5* I really enjoyed this installment. Shiro is by far my favorite character in this series. By the way this volume ended I’m so ready to pick up the next one.

I really enjoyed this first volume and I’m pretty confident it will only get better. At times it was a little confusing especially considering I haven’t seen the anime but it wasn’t too bad.
