Everything Is OK

Debbie Tung β€” 2022
From the bestselling author of Quiet Girl in a Noisy World comes a gently humorous and poignant collection of comics about anxiety and depression--because sometimes even the simple things like getting out of bed every day feel like an uphill battle. Everything Is OK is the story of Debbie Tung's struggle with anxiety and her experience with depression. She shares what it's like navigating life, overthinking every possible worst-case scenario, and constantly feeling like all hope is lost. The book explores her journey to understanding the importance of mental health in her day-to-day life and how she learns to embrace the highs and lows when things feel out of control. Debbie opens up about deeply personal issues and the winding road to recovery, discovers the value of self-love, and rebuilds a more mindful relationship with her mental health. In this graphic memoir, Debbie aims to provide positive and comforting messages to anyone who is facing similar difficulties or is just trying to get through a tough time in life. She hopes to encourage readers to be kinder to themselves, to know that they are not alone, and that it's okay to be vulnerable because they are not defined by their mental health struggles. The dark clouds won't be there forever. Everything will turn out all right.

[No Rating.] I don't have a rating, but I do have a lot of favorite quotes:

πŸ’«"What are you thinking about?" "Everything.”

πŸ’« "Try not to think too much." "Ok." "How do I do that?"

πŸ’«"When you're depressed you feel all alone. You internalize everything because of the stigma surrounding mental illness."

πŸ’« "Maybe I'm just really bad at this." "Bad at what?" "Life."

πŸ’« "I end up getting too anxious about feeling anxious."

πŸ’« "You are allowed to feel things you feel and those feelings matter."

πŸ’« "I know you place a lot of worth in your work and that it's really important to you...But don't forget that you are not defined by your productivity."

πŸ’« "Recognize your uniqueness. Be proud of who you are, what you have, what your life is about, and what you want to pursue. Pay attention to your own path. You don't need validation from others."

πŸ’« "Be kind to others. But don't forget to be kind to yourself too."

πŸ’« "When something doesn't go the way we want it to, it's easy to see it as a failure. But it's more like a chapter in our journey. We learn from every experience."

πŸ’« "Accept the notion that you cannot change the past. Your past does not define you...and it is not in control of your future."

πŸ’« "Let go of things that no longer serve you. It's tough, but it can free you from the things that were holding you back."

πŸ’« "Love yourself a little more today."

πŸ’« "There is a common misconception that our moods are either one or the other at any given time. We are either depressed or not depressed. We are either anxious or not anxious. But it's more like a spectrum. We are all usually somewhere in between and that can change from day to day."

πŸ’« "I used to see my sensitivity as a weakness. I've come to understand it is also my strength."

πŸ’« "You don't need permission from anyone to be yourself."

πŸ’« "Be gentle with yourself. Take your time to heal."

πŸ’« "You won't feel this way forever. The storm will end. One day it will get better and you will be so grateful that you didn't give up."

β€œWe expect that by the time we become adults, we will have a secure life plan right in front of us.” β€œThe thing is, there is no right way to do life. We are all winging it.” β€œAnd we are all doing the best we can.” Solid 5 stars from me, I found this relatable and I feel seen. I personally would recommend this book to those who are struggling in their 20s (well, I am too), we are in this together!!
