A remarkable story, marred a bit by lackluster writing. To his credit, Tobar had to wrestle with a large and diverse cast of real-life characters, and it could not have been easy to coordinate the stories of not only 33 men, but also their families, rescuers, and hangers-on.

I enjoyed the book, however, especially in the moments when it would suddenly come to me that this *really happened*. There were tense moments leading up to the ultimate rescue itself, a real accomplishment given that we already knew the happy outcome.
