When I first heard about the book, I presumed that the story was solely about the brutality of martial lawunder the lat e Marcos regime. However, as I turned the pages, I discovered additional to pics that were discussed.

The book also explores the state of women in patriarchal society, gender roles, and discrimination.

Even though I am still in the first few pages of the book, I could sense how Julian, the husband, has always emphasized that the world is a man's world. In addition, it was portrayed how society views women: that we are solely responsible for taking care of our house and children. Lastly, Julian also opened up about how it was also tough being a man (woah, the audacity), for they are expected to act tough all the time.

Second, it also tackles family dynamics—how they have different beliefs and different approaches to life. 

Third, the downside of a conservative mindset resulted in bigger problems. This occurred when two teenagers were forced to set foot into marriage when they were still together.

Fourth, the the story highlights empowerment. The message of the story stated how one should follow their desires (as long as they're not immoral) in order to feel free. In addition, it also empowers women, for as the story progressed, Amanda, the mother, started to stand up for herself and discover her purpose. 

Consequently, and most especially, the story has showcased how power was abused by the authority during this period of time. How violence was prevalent and how "enhancing the discipline of the people" became an instrument for numerous human rights violations. 

Lastly, it emphasizes the power of our voice. and how activism must never be labeled as terrorism.

The government should serve the people, not the other way around. Therefore, we have the right to demand and criticize the failure of an incompetent administration.
