The engine was an old wood-burning steam colossus throbbing and booming and groaning while its vapors roared like a falls, the horses over on the skid road moving gigantically in a kind of silence, their noises erased by the commotion of steam and machinery. From the landing the logs went onto railroad flatcars, and then across the wondrous empty depth of Robinson Gorge and down the mountain to the link with all the railways of the American continent.

He stood up straight himself and howled long and sorrowfully over the gorge, and over the low quiet river he could hardly see across this close to nightfall...Nothing from the pup. But often, thereafter, when Grainier heard the wolves at dusk, he laid his head back and howled for all he was worth, because it did him good. It flushed out something heavy that tended to collect in his heart, and after an evening's program with his choir of British Columbian wolves he felt warm and buoyant. 

Do you think I was scared? Well, I was. She'll be blood-drunk and running along the roads talking in your own voice, Mr. Peterson, is what he says to me. 

“It takes a great much of pulling," he'd explain to anyone helping him, closing his eyes and entering a darkness of bone torment, “more than that - pull harder a great deal of pulling now, greater, greater, you just have to pull .." until the big joint unlocked with a sound between a pop and a gulp. 

The wolves and coyotes howled without letup all night, sounding in the hundreds, more than Grainier had ever heard, and maybe other creatures too, owls, - what, exactly, he couldn't guess - surely every single animal with a voice along the peaks and ridges looking down on the Moyea River, as if nothing could ease any of God's beasts. Grainier didn't dare to sleep, feeling it all to be some sort of vast pronouncement, maybe the alarms of the end of the world.

The imprint of prior genreations ebbs away as time glides forward. The imprint of nature corralled from the frontersmen, woven into rickety tresses, dilpatidated ghost towns, and ghostly stumps, reminds us that time moves through, heeding no call of our own. The sawyer Robert Grainier, the protagonsit of Denis Johnson's "Train Dreams" , seems unknowable to the reader as he is to himself. We observe his life through the zigs and zags of memory. Bridges to universally potent mmments, like falling and love, and leading a family, give us entry points to his emotional core. And yet, there are moments of profundity that are spellbinding, portencious, and hauntingly filter through Grainier's sparse prose. "Train Dreams" is a story of two frameworsks. The small frame is about the yearnings and dreams of Grainier; described in dreams, flashbacks, or ponderings deep in the woods where human thoughts blend with a larger consciousness. Whether he is traveling alongsid ethe Kootenai River or walking through a country fair, we sense a deep-seeded loneliness or aloneness. Thee are windows into other lived words - from the animals that scattered in near his logging, or his distance encounter with Elvis outside a stoppeed train, we sense that Granier is hurling through the slipstream of time but never in control. There is also the larger frame, about the burgeoning advancement of modernity and technological advancements unbinding us from nature. Robert spends his eighty years building and living off the American pryamids, the great railways of the Pacific Northwest, the chasm between the world he built and the one we inhabit seems incalculable. There is much to admire with "Train Dreams". There are a series of episodes that feels organic and specific to Grainier, but the meaning is often difficult to parse out. Johnson resists simple truths or platitudes; in many ways the story feels more confounding as it goes on. The wider world that Grainier encounters adds mystery and alienation; we can feel the hermtic pull of a character who is not ready to leap into a mid-century America. The language of the short story employs specificity, wonderous descriptions, and madcap experiences that suggest straddling the temporal existence of Grainier is a more haunting spiritual one. Much like the fascinating movie adaptation (Nov 2025) by Clint Bentley, I found the short story to be unique and disquieting. It reminded me of a Raymond Carver story with the threadbare scaffolding that dives deep into the messy networks of human lives. It also reminded me of the austere gothic stories of Flanner O'Connery. And still there was something remarkably distancing about Johnson's short story - one that left me admiring more than loving it, but nevertheless riveted by the beautiful fragmentary unfolding Like the best economical writing, the story suggested there is mountain beneath the visible iceberg. Spirits form in a guttering candle. Unnatural beasts howl and unnerve us. Firelight flittrs like a curtain from the dark - vividly seperating the knowable and unknowalbe. "Train Dreams" displayings unweilding universal spirit as the backdrop to Johnson's story - an American story of ironclad progress and ecological rupture. It's a small story that suggets a wider narrative is in place; one audible in the humbling quiet of the untrammelled or forgotten places.

Simple and subtle novella about the American northwest at the turn of the 20th century. Following the life of yeoman Robert Grainier from birth onwards, the story revisits the mythology of the West and its way of life. After a grand tragedy, Grainier retreats into the scorched forest and builds his life increasingly as a hermit. Full of characters unique to this way life including drifters, drunks, Native Americans, widows, independent dogs and lumberjacks, the book strikes a wonderful balance of epic and banal. Anachronistic scenes of Model T's following horse-drawn carts and a widow discussing her plethora of options are particular stand-outs. A wonderful, short read that has the simplicity and impact that is reminiscent of Old Man and the Sea.

അങ്ങനെ ജീവിതം മുന്നോട്ടു പോയിക്കൊണ്ടിരിയ്ക്കേ അസാധാരണമായ ഒരു കാട്ടുതീ ആ പ്രദേശത്തുണ്ടാകുന്നു. പിൽക്കാലത്ത് അവിടെ, വനത്തിൽ വളരുന്ന മരങ്ങൾ വരെ വേറെ തരമായിപ്പോയി എന്നാണ് നോവലിൽ. അത്ര ശക്തിയേറിയ ("stronger than God"എന്ന് വിവരണം) ഒന്നായിരുന്നു അത്. He leaves the gore and guts of war hung firmly on the Tree of Smoke and writes like a completely different favorite writer about a fat man in the carnival, a Kootenai Indian named Bob and a man who fondly remembers jiggering a cow. I could read it again and again and I think that I will.
