I've loved this book since I was young. Will and his respect/fear of his grandmother (guardian) is fun to read about, Yenene always knows that Will and moonshine are up to something but turns a blind eye and gives him food for the journey. They live on a cactus which is cool and all Will wants is justice for his Pa who was murdered on the job (police/sheriff). The author shows respect for Will being a "halfling" (half elf, half cowboy), and the author also shows an awareness of what that might mean for Will as a child growing up on a ranch and not with elves, how he is bullied and hides his elf traits such as critter chat and his pointy ears until he is sure no one can see him. Noose Wormwood is ugly, from the description and the grotesque illustrations within the book, he is the equivalent of a mobster with too much power for anyone to go after him, however, Will's courage decides to screw self-preservation and head out after the snake bellied troll in justice (revenge)for his Pa's unlawful murder because no one else is doing anything about it.
