Dirty Laundry

            This is one of those stories that makes you really sit and think.  Ciara was an absolutely terrible human.  She treated everybody around her horribly, including her husband and children, and she was a malicious bully.  There was truly nothing redeeming about her, yet somehow the book is about figuring out how and why she died.  It begs the question: why should we care?

            Genuinely, why should we care how she died?  It felt like everybody around her would be far better off if she was no longer in their lives, so what’s the point of trying to discover the culprit?  The further we get into the book, the more we learn that pretty much everybody Ciara knows might have a good reason for her to be gone, which makes any investigation into her death almost pointless.  However, much like driving past a grisly car crash, I couldn’t peel my eyes away from each page.  I absolutely had to find out exactly how Ciara met her end.  And it was glorious.

            I’m not usually one that wishes harm to others, but I feel like it’s a victimless wish when it happens because of a fictional story.  There was nothing likable about Ciara, thus her demise felt just.  I almost want one of those “where are they now” updates on the remaining characters.  I’d love to know what their lives looked like after Ciara was gone.  This book kept me intrigued from start to finish, it’s definitely worth reading.

Good start but the ending just was a bit disappointing

This was a short book that took me a long time to read. The three main characters, moms in suburban Ireland, had backstories that were sad, yes, but no one was likable, and the ending was just somehow lacking. I did like the writing, and will read more from this author.
