I‘m really into post-apocalyptic stories so it’s actually no surprise that I liked this one. It’s the first book in a trilogy and that’s exactly how it felt like as there was massive focus on worldbuilding (that got me confused a lot) instead of focus on the characters and their development. Still my head switched to „cinema mode“ pretty fast and I enjoyed exploring the dark tunnels of Moscau’s metro.

Erstaunlich viel Politik und Philosophie. Erstaunlich wenig Frauenfiguren. Musste mich zum Teil echt ein bisschen durchkämpfen, aber ich mag es richtig. Muss sagen, dass mich das letzte Kapitel (die Bonusgeschichte) eigentlich sogar mehr gefesselt hat als die 764 Seiten davor. Ich mag Sci-Fi Dystopie mit postapokalyptischer Äesthetik

Played the games then read the books. I think turning books into games is the better option than movies/tvshows. It means you get to live and experience the story.

Eine Dystopiegeschichte, die seinesgleichen sucht. Moskau im Jahre 2033, zerstört durch einen atomaren Krieg, die Bürgerinnen und Bürger haben sich ins weitreichende Netzwerk der Metro zurückgezogen. Die Zustände: Dystopisch. Die Leute: Grummelig. Waffen und Munition: Rar. So rar, dass Patronen neben ihrem Nutzen als Werkzeug des Todes anders verwendet werden. Statt Münzen oder Scheinen werden die Patronen zum Tausch verwendet. Statt Städten haben sich in den Stationen neue Gemeinschaften gebildet. Dieses Buch zeigt einem die tiefsten menschlichen Abgründe auf, die sich inmitten einem postapokalyptischem Setting bilden können. Dmitry Glukhovsky schreckt nicht davor, diese Abgründe in seinem expliziten und detaillierten Schreibstil zu beschreiben, ohne Rücksicht auf Verluste. Es ist eine Geschichte von Hoffnung und wie sie mit Füßen getreten wird. 

Man braucht harte Nerven, keine Frage, doch wer sich drauf einlässt, wird definitiv belohnt werden.

Dieses letzte Kapitel + Bonusgeschichte hat mein Herz zerissen. Eine Wendung mit der ich niemals gerechnet hätte!

           I know a lot of people who were disappointed by this book , so my expectations were really low. I think this played in the favor of the book, because without expecting anything i was pretty open to the experience and therefore was able to enjoy it (immensly, actually).

Dont want to spoil anything, but i feel like the genre here does not truly represent what this book is. If you are going for a truly realistic science fiction book, you might end up disappointed. If you are up for fantasy as well, this is a really novel idea, well written and thought trough.

The year is 2033. The world has been reduced to rubble. Humanity is nearly extinct. The half-destroyed cities have become uninhabitable through radiation. Beyond their boundaries, they say, lie endless burned-out deserts and the remains of splintered forests. Survivors still remember the past greatness of humankind. But the last remains of civilisation have already become a distant memory, the stuff of myth and legend. More than 20 years have passed since the last plane took off from the earth. Rusted railways lead into emptiness. The ether is void and the airwaves echo to a soulless howling where previously the frequencies were full of news from Tokyo, New York, Buenos Aires. Man has handed over stewardship of the earth to new life-forms. Mutated by radiation, they are better adapted to the new world. Man's time is over. A few score thousand survivors live on, not knowing whether they are the only ones left on earth. They live in the Moscow Metro - the biggest air-raid shelter ever built. It is humanity's last refuge. Stations have become mini-statelets, their people uniting around ideas, religions, water-filters - or the simple need to repulse an enemy incursion.
