To think well involves more than the intellect. We think with our hands and our hearts, we think by moving, we think by making. We each think in different ways and we think together in conversation. The normal environment doesn't support this quality of thinking and, as a result, most of the time we are just reacting. Creating 'time out to think' takes care and attention. It is precious as well as scarce.

Good places to create a pause…are everywhere, if you look for them. The parks, gardens, squares, cathedrals, canals and rooftops of any city are at your disposal. Use them.

The times for tilling, sowing and harvesting feel very different. They have a different energy. Use that. When are you harvesting and when is it appropriate to let things lie fallow? Which times are spring, summer, autumn or winter in your work, irrespective of the date on the calendar. This will give you a sense of where you might want to put some pause and can release you from feeling you have to push on with everything, all the time.
