Kaum ein Roman der Weltliteratur hat eine ähnlich anregende, fruchtbare kultur- und geistesgeschichtliche Wirkung gehabt und war gleichzeitig so vielen Deutungen und Missdeutungen ausgesetzt wie dieser. Ohne Don Quijote, dessen weltliterarische Bedeutung außerhalb Spaniens erst im 18. Jahrhundert voll erkannt wurde, ist der neue europäische Roman nicht denkbar.
