How the Technology Behind Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency Is Changing the World

Blockchain Revolution

Don Tapscott

The first book to explain why blockchain technology will fundamentally change the Internet, what it does, and how we use it Over the past 30 years, no theorist of the digital age has better explained the next big thing than Don Tapscott. For example, in Wikinomics, Tapscott was the first to show how the Internet provides the first global platform for mass collaboration. Now, he writes about a profound technological shift that will change how the world does business--and everything else--using blockchain technology, which powers the digital currency Bitcoin. The Internet as we know it is great for collaboration and communication, but is deeply flawed when it comes to commerce and privacy. The new blockchain technology facilitates peer-to-peer transactions without any intermediary such as a bank or governing body. Keeping the user's information anonymous, the blockchain validates and keeps a permanent public record of all transactions. That means that your personal information is private and secure, while all activity is transparent and incorruptible--reconciled by mass collaboration and stored in code on a digital ledger. With its advent, we will not need to trust one another in the traditional sense, because trust is built into the system itself. Although many opportunities for the blockchain require a digital currency, Bitcoin is only one application of this great innovation in computer science. The blockchain can hold any legal document, from deeds and marriage licences to educational degrees and birth certificates. Call it the World Wide Ledger. It enables smart contracts, decentralized autonomous organizations, decentralized government services, and transactions among things. The Internet of Everything needs a Ledger of Everything: the blockchain is a truly open, distributed, global platform that fundamentally changes what we can do online, how we do it, and who can participate. Tapscott, writing with his son Alex, a financial analyst and technologist, argues that the blockchain will shape the next era of prosperity--in finance, business, healthcare, education, governance, and beyond.

The Brilliant Technology Changing Money, Business and the World

Recomendado.

A pretty decent primer on blockchain technology but I have to say that after having read it I still don't think I could explain it. I found my way to this on Audible after spending a month on Steemit.com, a social media platform that pays crypto in Steem to its users as rewards for content curated by the platform's users. I'm keen to invite others to the paradigm, but without being able to explain it, it's a real problem. I thought this book would give me the info I needed, but it fell short.

Don't get me wrong - I did learn a lot from reading this, but it skirted over the surface of the technology by giving repeated examples of how useful the technology could be without really going into how it works. Of course explaining how it works could actually have made it rather turgid and dense as I'm not sure whether that can be explained to the layman very comprehensibly.

I ordered and plowed through this book in the midst of writing my master's thesis on putting Euros on the blockchain and the start of the epic crypto bull run of 2017. This book exactly manifests the optimism of the crypto year of 2017 when blockchain went mainstream. The book summarizes all places where "Blockchain will eat the world":
* Reinventing financial services
* Rearchitecting the company
* New business models - distributed p2p
* The ledger of things for an internet of things
* Economic inclusion and entrepreneurship
* Rebuilding governments and democracy
* Music and arts on the ledgers
As well as the design principles and showstoppers.

Overall the book feels optimistic, pie in the sky, and everything-will-be-awesome. Ironically in 3 years since its release, we are no closer to a Blockchain utopia. The forces of the world are massively stubborn against a decentralized, peer-2-peer, idealistic crypto world. With crypto dying down in popularity, no one cares anymore. I haven't seen anyone really solve a problem with blockchain minus trading. Maybe someday, for now, it's a good fun read of Web 3.0.
