Forgiveness, I finally decide, is not the death of amnesia, nor is it a form of madness, as Derrida claims. For the one who forgives, it is simply a death, a dying down in the heart, the position of the already dead. It is in the end the living through, the understanding that this has happened, is happening, happens. Period. It is a feeling of nothingness that cannot be communicated to another, an absence, a bottomless vacancy held by the living, beyond all that is hated or loved.

Ethical loneliness is the isolation one feels when one, as a violated person or as one member of a persecuted group, has been aban doned by humanity, or by those who have power over one's life possibilities.

In a taxi speeding uptown on the West Side Highway, I let my thoughts drift below the surface of the Hudson until it finally occurs to me that feelings fill the gaps created by the indirectness of experience. Though the experience is social, thoughts carry it into a singular space and it is this that causes the feelings of loneliness; or it is this that collides the feeling with the experience so that what is left is the solitude called loneliness. And from that space of loneliness, I can feel the cab driver watching me in his rearview mirror.

It occurs to me that forty could be half my life or it could be all my life. On the television I am told I don't want to look like I am forty.

Forty means I might have seen something hard, something unpleas-ant, or something dead. I might have seen it and lived beyond it in time. Or I might have squinted my eyes too many times in order to see it, I might have turned my face to the sun in order to look away.

I might have actually been alive. With injections of Botox, short for botulism toxin, it seems I can see or be seen without being seen; I can age without aging. I have the option of worrying without looking like I worry. Each day of this life I could bite or shake doubt as if to injure or kill without looking as if anything mattered to me. I could paralyze facial muscles that cause wrinkles. All those worry and frown lines would disappear. I could purchase paralysis. I could choose that.

Eventually the paralysis would sink in, become a deepening personality that need not, like Enron's "distorting factors"" distort my appearance. I could be all that seems, or rather I could be all that I am—fictional. Ultimately I could face reality undisturbed by my own mortality.

Because the foundations for loneliness begin in the dreamscapes yo create. Their resemblance to reality reflects disappointment first.

Where Citizen is essays and articulated thoughts, Don’t Let Me Be Lonely is dream states and small moments. It is dark and morbid; it is depressive. It brings you into post 9-11 America and Bush’s America. It references anxieties that keep you up at night. It muses on death. It sanctifies people like Lionel Tate and Abner Louima. Claudia Rankine keeps waking up in a fever dream that is America and these are her dream journals. Her struggles with falling asleep. Her proximity to suicide. Her collection of expirations.  This was a history lesson for me and a transport back in time. I was a kid when most of the events discussed were happening— fully unaware of the terrors that go bump in America’s night. But this book transported me there—twenty years ago.  I recommend you read this but do so with care. It is such a book that reminds you of loneliness but still reaches out a hand nevertheless.
