Dracula, Gothic novel by Bram Stoker, published in 1897, that was the most popular literary work derived from vampire legends and became the basis for an entire genre of literature.

I’m in disbelief of this book. Really, I am.

The first few chapters follows Jonathan Harker and his travels to the Count. What follows suit is something brilliantly terrifying; it’s clear something is off from the moment he arrives, but he continues to make excuses until it’s too much to bear. Jonathan and the Count play a back and fourth game of pretending everything is totally fine, and it really sets you on edge! Absolutely brilliant!

…Then, you cut to various letters between Jonathan’s wife, her friend, and various other male characters. It sucked the life out of the book for me on the first read. I was like, “can we go back to the castle yet, orrr…?”

I honestly put down the book and didn’t intend to come back. I really was so very heartbroken the story would no longer be told from Jonathan’s point of view. When you go in expecting vampires and horror and have to deal with love quarrels and romance, it’s all very… bleh.

But I’m so glad I came back for another go. Jonathan isn’t even in my top five characters honestly! Everyone has their role to play and they play it amazingly. The gothic horror is present throughout the entirety of the book; the shock of leaving the castle is just something you have to fight though for a few chapters of setup, and then the rest of the book is smooth sailing. 

TLDR - this book is about love and the power of fucking friendship. It is brilliantly badass. You should be reading it for the female characters alone.
