As the book is only 160 pages with illustrations, it would make a great book to read aloud in a classroom setting or as a bed time story over the course of about a week.

This wonderful middle grade fantasy series opener is set in Brooklyn but finds its way to the Mesozoic era and a magical Africa all the same in an engaging, suspenseful, quickly paced story about finding friendship and family where you least expect it. Nine year old Jaxon and his mom, Alicia, are struggling to make their rent. When his mom has to go to court to fight to stay in their apartment, she takes Jax to a woman he has never met before, never heard of before, an old lady with white hair that his mama calls "Ma". He assumes this is his grandmother, but wonders why he has never met her until now. Ma isn't happy at all to see Jax and Alicia on her doorstep and only reluctantly agrees to watch him for one day.
