To the future or to the past, to a time when thought is free. when men are different from one another and do not live alone-to a time when truth exists and what is done cannot be undone: From the age of uniformity, from the age of solitude, from e age of Big Brother, from the age of doublethink-greetings!

“Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past”

He tried to squeeze out some childhood memory that should tell him whether London had always been quite like this.

It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time.

…he couldn’t remember: nothing remained of his childhood except a series of bright-lit tableaux, occurring against no background and mostly unintelligible.

It was curious that he seemed not merely to have lost the power of expressing himself, but even to have forgotten what it was that he had originally intended to say.

In a lucid moment Winston found that he was shouting with the others and kicking his heel violently against the rung of his chair. The horrible thing about the Two Minutes Hate was not that one was obliged to act a part, but that it was impossible to avoid joining in. Within tirty seconds any pretence was always unnecessary.

And yet the rage that one felt was an abstract, undirected emotion which could be switched from one object to another like the flame of a blow lamp.

literally rip your own dick off and bleed out winston you unloveable fuck :

Suddenly, by the sort of violent effort with which one wrenches one's head away from the pillow in a nightmare, Winston succeeded in transferring his hatred from the face on the screen to the dark-haired girl behind him. Vivid, beautiful hallucinations flashed through his mind. He would flog her to death with a rubber truncheon. He would tie her naked to a stake and shoot her full of arrows like Saint Sebastian. He would ravish her and cut her throat at the moment of climax. Better than before, moreover, he realized wby it was that he hated her. He hated her because she was young and pretty and sexless, because he wanted to go to bed with her and would never do so, because round her sweet supple waist, which seemed to ask you to encircle it with your arm, there wAs only the odious scarlet sash, aggressive symbol of chastity.

you hate women because you cant get any you incel fuck. ewwww

He disliked nearly all women, and especially the young and pretty ones. It was always the women, and above all the young ones, who were the most bigoted adherents of the Party, the swallowers of slogans, the amateur spies and nosers-out of unorthodoxy. But this particular girl gave him the impression of being more dangerous than most.

Yes, this is one of if not the best book I've ever read and will go down as the book that for me into politics

George Orwell’s 1984 takes on new life with extraordinary relevance and renewed popularity. “Orwell saw, to his credit, that the act of falsifying reality is only secondarily a way of changing perceptions. It is, above all, a way of asserting power.”—The New Yorker In 1984, London is a grim city in the totalitarian state of Oceania where Big Brother is always watching you and the Thought Police can practically read your mind. Winston Smith is a man in grave danger for the simple reason that his memory still functions. Drawn into a forbidden love affair, Winston finds the courage to join a secret revolutionary organization called The Brotherhood, dedicated to the destruction of the Party. Together with his beloved Julia, he hazards his life in a deadly match against the powers that be. Lionel Trilling said of Orwell’s masterpiece, “1984 is a profound, terrifying, and wholly fascinating book. It is a fantasy of the political future, and like any such fantasy, serves its author as a magnifying device for an examination of the present.” Though the year 1984 now exists in the past, Orwell’s novel remains an urgent call for the individual willing to speak truth to power.

This is a dystopian novel talking about the harshness of the totalitarian government. The novel includes major topics like harsh rules, media propaganda, attempts of rebelion and brainwashing. The book is dystopian so after a level it just feels like the rules are for the sake of it and the obession over just power is not really practical; I expected abit more depth to the mindset behind this government. I also wished the main character was shown abit more smarter if he is tackling with such a government; the 'rebelion' angle was very weak. Its hard to relate and understand the protagonist when your ideas are decent but your execution is zero. However, I do appreciate the fact a good chunk of these rules do last in today's time when it comes to an authoritative regime which we witness in North Korea for instance.

Its a good read but nothing major going on; I shall give George Orwell his flowers for popularising this genre but thats that.

"We are living it!! It's not a simple book!!". Maybe it's true, but that's not the important thing. Orwell was not a visionary because he predicted the future, but because he perfectly photographed human nature, which had always been unchanged.

This book is a must-read, with ideas that remain relevant after more than 70 years of publication! It feels like any authoritarian government from around the world. It’s like the manual used in many countries. It just needs obedient people following ideas without challenging them, and just entertained, trying to survive by finding food and water, or just fighting to survive.

I found the first two parts quite boring but the last one easily made up of for them.

It was interesting and was the first book I read this year and also in a while. Not really my cup of tea but it was a good read to begin my reading journey.

Vu l’ambiance politique actuelle, semble essentiel !

After a lifetime of hearing references from this book, I finally got round to reading it. I believe everyone should read this book, and any country that tries to ban or restrict it

I enjoyed the pacing and the world building, and Orwell does a great job at depicting the psychology of those under authoritarian rule, along with dealing with greater themes such as class.

Although I do think this is rightfully named a classic, I rated it 4 as I found aspects a bit tedious, such as the drawn-out sections on Newspeak, and the last section of the book was a bit underwhelming for me. But overall, a must-read.

man i really thought he would achieve more but in the end he lost.

didn’t like this as much as BNW as I expected but it was still a very interesting read, the fact that it is set in london was really cool

My favorite book I’ve read recently. Didn’t have any problems with it other than a little bit of disorientation during parts towards the end, but I feel as though it’s purposefully reflective of Winston’s state so I’d say it did its job. I am not of the common opinion that it is an overrated book, I find it to be thought provoking and to have remarkably horrifying modern real-world parallels that show how brilliant Orwell was with his foresight

I read George Orwell's Nineteen eighty four, a dystopian fiction. It was published in 1949. It's set in the future year 1984, when the civilization has been damaged by war, conflict and revolution. ⠀ ⠀ This book illustrates totalitarianism, mass surveillance of cities. I was actually traumatized, when I started the second part. The first part just moves with the protagonist who enjoys his love life amidst all the political dilemmas. ⠀ ⠀ The second part! Oh my goodness! It's so hard to actually get into it. But when I finished it, it hit me hard; it was really depressing and terrifying. I mean how this man actually wrote a book like this. How he imagined a government that controls the people's mind and information?⠀ ⠀ I read somewhere that this is George Orwell's last book and he was in an urge to finish this one. Though it was criticised when first published, now it is celebrated as his masterpiece. ⠀ ⠀ I strongly recommend this book to all who love politics.
