Holy friggin' hell. I finished this in a single sitting. So much more intensely personal than you might expect, given the social and political focuses on the oil sands. Shot through with unease and a sense that nothing is quite right, not even a bit, yet Beaton consistently strives for understanding and interrogation when it would be perfectly understandable to write the whole damn enterprise off. 

This is deeply affecting. As a man I am consistently shocked and disappointed with the behaviour of men in any given scenario.

Much of the book is spent with Kate trying to do her job and trying not to react to the toxic masculinity around her. Unfortunately she like every other woman in this book is ultimately assaulted by one of the men she works with. Of course its her reputation and job on the line.

This is a brutal read with some moments of humor. Beaton's backgrounds are intricate and capture the destruction to a once beautiful landscape.

Well that was crushing. But one of the best comics I've read this year, regardless. I regret I steamed through it in a day, but it was pretty unputdownable. I read another review that compared it to Fun Home, Maus, and Persepolis. I think that's justified.

So many parallels to my work in manufacturing. Beautifully told and illustrated. An emotional gut punch.

This graphic novel was incredibly interesting, thought-provoking, and emotionally engaging. It was not at all what I was expecting - in the best way possible. An instant Canadian classic, and something that every Canadian should read (no matter their thoughts on the Alberta’s oil sands).

This book is hard to read and really sad but really good. TW for sexual assault and harassment. But I think it tells it's story really well, and I wish men understood who they are and how they affect others

This is a bleak book, from the black and white drawings to the subject matter. I had an idea what working in the oil sands would be like and this filled in the rest of the picture. Yet with all the awfulness that surrounds Beaton, there's also some protectiveness for her coworkers. It deals with big issues and also a lot of humanity too.
