Bilbo Baggins, a respectable, well-to-do hobbit, lives comfortably in his hobbit-hole until the day the wandering wizard Gandalf chooses him to take part in an adventure from which he may never return.

This stirring adventure is a fantasy that introduces the far-wandering hobbit, Bilbo Baggins.

Chapitres parfois un peu longs notamment au début, mais l'univers général du Hobbit et de la terre du milieu est tellement approfondis et bien pensé qu'on ne peut qu'admirer les créations de Tolkien.

The Hobbit

My father's favorite book. I've read it twice and just received a special deluxe edition as a gift; soon it's time for another adventure :)

Connor

Bilbo Baggins, the hobbit, is a peaceful sort who lives in a cozy hole in the Shire, a place where adventures are uncommon - and rather unwanted. So when the wizard Gandalf whisks him away on a treasure-hunting expedition with a troop of rowdy dwarves, he's not entirely thrilled. Encountering ruthless trolls, beastly orcs, gigantic spiders, and hungry wolves, Bilbo discovers within himself astonishing strength and courage. And at the ultimate confrontation with the fearsome dragon Smaug, the hobbit will brave the dangers of the dark and dragon fire alone and unaided.

No doubt that its a great and a well-written book but, I can't exactly say I loved it. I mean I certainly enjoyed reading it and indeed it was adventurous, but it is also true that I just didn't get hooked to it, and it's a personal thing. I liked how simple and short this book was, even after containing all these adventures it was really concise. It was perfectly elaborate even after being a short (305 pg) read. Except some parts were very slow and made it not very interesting, which is why it took me almost 1 month to complete it. Conclusion: I think anyone who wants a fantasy book with lots of adventures, happy memories, loves reading magical stories consisting of a large number of characters and detailed history behind them would love it.

Reread 2025: 5* - Original rating: 4* I really liked the first third of the book. The part after Bilbo left Gollum and before they met Smaug was really dragging for me I had to switch to audiobook. Which turned out well actually because I liked it better on audio!

El Hobbit

me encanta lo inmersivo que es tolkien, su forma de describir las cosas y como te resuelve las dudas, te dan ganas de saber más historia sobre este universo ficticio, casi parece real de lo bien detallado que está.

A lovely story, though not at all what I would normally read. I do find it strange that some of Tolkien's races, like orcs and goblins and trolls and wargs, are painted as irredeemable, monolithic cultures, while others, like elves and dwarves, have a lot more nuance to them. I loved the worldbuilding and I wish there were more little details about the lore of the places and people, which is interesting because too much of this is exactly what normally keeps me away from fantasy as a genre. I loved how sassy Gandalf is, he's just a silly little guy. I find the themes of greed, revenge, and friendship really interesting and I will have to continue to think on them before I come to any real conclusions thereupon.

"Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely travelling further than the pantry of his hobbit-hole in Bag End. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard, Gandalf, and a company of thirteen dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an unexpected journey 'there and back again'. They have a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon..."--Page [4] of cover.

It's sad to say, but I was incredibly bored after chapter 4. Mind you, I was listening to a dramatic audiobook, so that's saying something. I'm so mad, 'cause I really wanted to enjoy it.

Amazing stuff. Tolkien never disappointed. But now it's perfect and additional nostalgia value.

Probably the most famous children's book of modern times -- regularly topping polls for "favourite book" and now available in a Large Type format to complement The Lord of The Rings Large Type trilogy. Bilbo Baggins enjoys a quiet and contented life, with no desire to travel far from the comforts of home; then one day the wizard Gandalf and a band of dwarves arrive unexpectedly and enlist his services -- as a burglar -- on a dangerous expedition to raid the treasure-hoard of Smaug the dragon. Bilbo's life is never to be the same again. The Hobbit became an instant success when it was first published in 1937, and more than 60 years later Tolkien's epic tale of elves, dwarves, trolls, goblins, myth, magic and adventure, with its reluctant hero Bilbo Baggins, has lost none of its appeal.

Tolkein loves a song.... chapter 3 was called "a short rest" but i dont think Tolkin knows what short means. Chapter 7 was called "queer housing" which is the name of my future home.

okay i get it.

Obviously, everyone talks about Tolkien's language obsession, but I want to point out his skill with emotionally cathartic and confronting bedside scenes. Deathbed, Elrond's bed, doesn't matter, Tolkien makes it memorable.

A great modern classic and the prelude to The Lord of the Rings. Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an adventure. They have launched a plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely Mountain he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature known as Gollum. “A glorious account of a magnificent adventure, filled with suspense and seasoned with a quiet humor that is irresistible . . . All those, young or old, who love a fine adventurous tale, beautifully told, will take The Hobbit to their hearts.” – New York Times Book Review

Gotta say Tolkien's work doesn't seem to be for me, but I'll read the LotR trilogy one day still, just not soon.

I think "The Hobbit" and likely the entire LotR universe has reminded me a lot of "Dune" in that it's a world with so much thought and effort put into it, yet its stories just wind up being close to junk.

Bilbo is unlikable by design; he never wishes to be a 'hero' of any sort and wants to stay inside. He has to be more-or-less tricked into going on this adventure. That's fine -- what a literary classic, no? Well, part of that trope is growth and I don't think Bilbo does much of that on this trip. In fact he really seems to be a lucky moron who whines the entire time, and not in any sort of amusing fashion.

Gandalf is cool, at least he does something from time to time.

None of the dwarves are given any personality aside from Thorin, and you'll just end up thinking he's a lousy moron. Of his dozen friends, one is given the personality of "He's fat" and that will be all we learn of the whole lot.

There are other characters, but they kinda suck. I wish we heard more from Bard, the only interesting person in this book who is royally screwed by inattention.

I found myself bored by this trip that took an entire year(!), this short book really feels quite long. Some of the action sequences are well done: I really enjoyed Smaug's anger and fiery-blasting of his Lonely Mountain home, and some of the Battle of Five Armies was okay. The rest? I hope you like reading songs (why would anyone?) and stiff dialogue. There is a lot of landscape description that I found dull. I hope the Woodelves all die.

Again, I'll read LotR I'm sure, but this was a bad start to things. I really hope the rest of the series is a step up, because "The Hobbit" sucked. I do not recommend it.

considering this book came out in 1937 i can understand how revolutionary it was for the fantasy genre. it was very easy to read and i enjoyed it but it felt a little dragged out -that might just be because there are other books i want to start reading atm tho

reread!!!! love love love, somehow i always forget that this is a kids book lol but it’s so fun and the world building is MWAAH! so good. there’s a reason it’s the start of such a huge franchise. i should really read the lotr books next…
