This book was extraordinary! Lately I’ve been obsessed with learning more about WWll. I ran across Eugene B Sledge and decided to pick this book up and I do not regret it . I don’t really read non-fiction , like ever ... but this book was so amazing. This book had me on a roller coaster of emotions (sad, shocked, disgusted) . The way he writes about his experience in the war really drew me in (sometimes I would even dream about some of the things I’ve read in this book) 


If you’re debating on reading it .... READ IT !!!

Written in a “aw shucks” manner, Gene Sledge tells of the horror of two battles during WWII. He very carefully describes “when the stuff hits the fan” and maintains that the slanty-eyed, bow-legged, buck-toothed Nips were the most savage of creatures – believing to the end that his battalion was justified in everything they did to or thought of the Japanese enemy. The introduction tells us that he wrote this for his family – so maybe that explains the Jimmy Stewart style. But even with this GP version there is no doubt of the terror experienced before, during and after these battles. He admits to recurring nightmares where dead marines get up and walk and of receiving further assignments that require him to take his weapon and advance to the front line. A very vivid account of WWII in the South Pacific.
