The Machine Stops is a short science fiction story. It describes a world in which almost all humans have lost the ability to live on the surface of the Earth. Each individual lives in isolation in a 'cell', with all bodily and spiritual needs met by the omnipotent, global Machine. Most humans welcome this development, as they are skeptical and fearful of first-hand experience. People forget that humans created the Machine, and treat it as a mystical entity whose needs supersede their own. Those who do not accept the deity of the Machine are viewed as 'unmechanical' and are threatened with "Homelessness". Eventually, the Machine apocalyptically collapses, and the civilization of the Machine comes to an end.

Edward Morgan Forster, OM (1879-1970), was an English novelist, short story writer, and essayist. He is known best for his ironic and well-plotted novels examining class difference and hypocrisy in early 20th-century British society. His humanistic impulse toward understanding and sympathy may be aptly summed up in the epigraph to his 1910 novel Howards End. He had five novels published in his lifetime. He achieved his greatest success with A Passage to India (1924). The novel takes as its subject the relationship between East and West, seen through the lens of India in the later days of the British Raj. His views as a secular humanist are at the heart of his work, which often depicts the pursuit of personal connections in spite of the restrictions of contemporary society. He is noted for his use of symbolism as a technique in his novels, and he has been criticised for his attachment to mysticism. His other works include Where Angels Fear to Tread (1905), The Longest Journey (1907), A Room with a View (1908) and Maurice (1971).

In 1909, there was not yet too sharp a divide between high literature and genre fiction. The best writers were still writing for periodicals. E M Forster wrote and published this highly regarded science fiction novella between publishing 'A Room With a View' (1908) and Howard's End (1910). I am not quite so entranced as many critics who might have been blinded by the desire to praise the work of a major literary figure in a new area. It is full of ideas but it is also didactic. The story has that slightly pompous envisioning of future history that we will see in Olaf Stapledon and the later H G Wells and the didacticism that worked in the first half of the twentieth century falls rather flat in the first decades of the twenty-first century. Yet it is worth reading as a dystopian precursor to 'Brave New World' with a humanity in the far future which lives, largely satisfied, in underground pods, having abandoned all fleshly pursuits in order to live in an intellectual world of 'ideas'. Forster is not looking forward at all. He is doing what so many of his generation did, looking back to something closer to paganism and then projecting the tendencies he disliked in the (then-)modern world, above all its arid intellectualism, into the far future. The religious critique is central to the novella. The point is that in an ostensibly secular culture, the citizens begin to fetishise the Machine that gives them a comfortable if restricted life, to the point where the Machine becomes the basis of a religion that provides no succour when things go wrong. The prescience in 1909 is perhaps in its description of something closer to the sort of totalitarian society that would emerge in the interwar years. Forster's genius here is in contesting the optimists who think that technology will provide all the solutions to current ills. In this, he is like Aldous Huxley and Martin Heidegger, sceptics about technology, and unlike the later H G Wells and the modern transhumanists. Indeed, Forster may have been deliberately contesting Wells' image of an evolved future of Eloi and Morlocks (1895). What might unnerve some is that Forster imagines many of the innovations that have created our world although I never take this sort of prescience too seriously - to predict a capability like that of the internet is not predicting the internet, just extrapolating an inherent possibility. Worth reading as an historical literary event, it helps to have a sense of the conditions in which Forster was writing. It reminds us that Wells' warnings about class conflict were challenged quite soon after by a more prescient understanding of how technology defines and controls us.

E.M. Forster is best known for his exquisite novels, but these two affecting short stories brilliantly combine the fantastical with the allegorical. In 'The Machine Stops', humanity has isolated itself beneath the ground, enmeshed in automated comforts, and in 'The Celestial Omnibus' a young boy takes a trip his parents believe impossible.

A classic of science fiction from 1909, about AI and the risks of technology swallowing humanity. Highly topical even today, almost 120 years after it's writing.

I was prompted to reread this short story when a comment on the review video I made of it years ago suggested that we're living through this scenario now. There are certainly parallels of physical isolation / digital community which are eerily prophetic, but I think this book says so much more, about finding meaning in living and cultural homogeneity and absolutism. Really looking forward to exploring these topics in a new video soon; this remains the most thought-provoking short story I've ever read.

He persuades a reluctant Vashti to endure the journey (and the resultant unwelcome personal interaction) to his room. There, he tells her of his disenchantment with the sanitised, mechanical world.
