Friday, Volume 1

Ed Brubaker2021
Finally in print - a genre-defying post-YA masterpiece from two of comics most acclaimed talents! A young adult detective hero finally grows up, in the first volume of this new hit series from award-winning creators Ed Brubaker (Reckless, PULP, Kill or be Killed) and Marcos Martin (The Private Eye, Daredevil), with brilliant colors by Muntsa Vicente. Friday Fitzhugh spent her childhood solving crimes and digging up occult secrets with her best friend Lancelot Jones, the smartest boy in the world. But that was the past, now she's in college, starting a new life on her own. Except when Friday comes home for the holidays, she's immediately pulled back into Lance's orbit and finds that something very strange and dangerous is happening in their little New England town... This is literally the Christmas vacation from Hell and neither of them may survive to see the New Year.

I received an eARC copy from Image Comics and Diamond Books via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. Adventurous Friday may have left her small town to go to college, but the small town and her past never left her. Upon returning to her hometown for Christmas vacation, a strange occurrence forces her to, hand in hand with her friend Lancelot, investigate further in an attempt to find out who the White Lady is. Friday would have been a perfect YA detective graphic novel had it explored that direction more; instead, it focused so much on Friday's hook-up drama with Lance and how that made her feel. It striped a lot of its mystery, or it could have been longer to develop characters and plot? Not sure about that, but I am looking forward to its sequel; hopefully, it will happen, as Volume 1 does not fully deliver. *** Points up for the artwork and colours ***

Not what I expected from an Ed Brubaker comic book in many ways despite the presence of many of his staples including flawed protagonists and mystery. The departures this books takes from his usual work undoubtedly pays off in numerous ways but I think does also lead to the book’s appeal becoming more niche. This is not a bad thing though. The stylized artwork by Marcos Martin and Muntsa Vincente is gorgeous and sets the tone for the story in so many ways. The design of the panels is also very thoughtful and leads to some immersive storytelling. Excited to see the story continue and sad that I have to wait. Luckily the next chapter is already available online but I’ll wait until the next three chapters are collected into the next paperback.
