The Murder in the Rue Morgue

"The Murders in the Rue Morgue" is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe published in Graham's Magazine in 1841. It has been claimed as the first detective story; Poe referred to it as one of his "tales of ratiocination". Similar works predate Poe's stories, including Das Fräulein von Scuderi (1819) by E.T.A. Hoffmann and Zadig (1748) by Voltaire.C. Auguste Dupin is a man in Paris who solves the mysterious brutal murder of two women. Numerous witnesses heard a suspect, though no one agrees on what language was spoken. At the murder scene, Dupin finds a hair that does not appear to be human.As the first true detective in fiction, the Dupin character established many literary devices which would be used in future fictional detectives including Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot. Many later characters, for example, follow Poe's model of the brilliant detective, his personal friend who serves as narrator, and the final revelation being presented before the reasoning that leads up to it. Dupin himself reappears in "The Mystery of Marie Roget" and "The Purloined Letter".

This was the very first short story, I read of Poe. Before this I have read his "The Tell Tale Heart", and I could never forget it. It had such an effect on my mind. How can someone, write something, so horrifying and realistic. It left a never ending impression, so I read "The Murders in the Rue Morgue", and it proved to be as amazing as his other works. In awe of Edgar Allan Poe!

A delightful murder mystery by Poe with a twist at the end I didn’t see coming at all! Though the prose took a little getting used to, I enjoyed it thoroughly and it has certainly made me curious to read more of his works. For anyone who enjoys reading Sherlock, I’d really recommend this short story!

First it was a little confusing, but after a few pages I was invested and had to keep reading. The ending was a big surprise.

I enjoyed reading this short story. I will definitely read more works of Edgar Allan Poe. I was a little disappointed with the ending though. The murderer really wasn't what I was expecting. At all. I prefer to try to solve the case together with the characters and try to puzzle out for myself who the culprit could be. Not the case with this one. The story just took an unexpected turn and I'm not entirely sure I like it. But since it's considered one of the first detective stories, I'll give it a pass. Still glad I read it.

Detective fiction by Edger Allan Poe. What is not to like? I appreciate Poe as a poet and further as the father of Gothic fiction. I did not expect this story to be captive as his usual writing, but it fulfilled my expectations.

Have to say that from the beginning this short history caught me, but I'm suspicious to say because I love Edgar Allan Poe. With a perfect writing, this book gets you from the first word and you get anxious to find what will happen next, all the nots are untied and the ending its surprising. As always, Edgar wrote a master piece.
