"Incomparable . . .because of its bravery, its wisdom, its vitality, and because it's a novel that never stops haunting." --Junot Díaz

Edinburgh

A gifted Korean American man confronts the terrors of his past as an adult when he confronts the molestation he suffered at the hands of his choir director.

A Novel

Tada

As a queer person, I’m naturally drawn to queer stories. No matter what kind of queer story it is or how it ends or how it is situated. So it’s safe to say that I’m thoroughly consumed by this book. Plus it's Alexander Chee, so it's a must read for me anyway. But, I gotta say, it’s a heavy read. It evoked a lot of sadness and self-realization in a way that makes me feel content. Content for the characters, and how it finally ends.

There were too many metaphors with elaborate set ups competing for space; the effect was muddled.

Beautiful, heart breaking, lyrically brilliant, emotionally difficult to get through. I cry.

This was hard-hitting, incredibly sad, haunting and beautifully written.
So many times I wanted to pick up "A Little Life" by Hanya Yanagihara, but it's a huge chunker of a book.
Edinburgh was along the same lines and I heard good things about it, while having a page count of 224 pages. I was excited to find it on Netgalley and wasn't disappointed.
Even after finishing I'll know that this story will linger in my thoughts and I'll try and pick up A Little Life as well, although I'll be needing a funny and entertaining read after this one.
From the description you'll already know about all the triggers in this book. This is certainly not for everyone, but if you like to read a thought-provoking, important but sad book I'd encourage you to pick this one up.

Thank you Netgalley for providing me with an eARC. All opinions expressed are my own.

'Every word makes me ache ... Written with exquisite empathy and grace' Roxane Gay'Singularly beautiful and psychologically harrowing ... One of the best American novels of this century' Boston Globe Twelve-year-old Fee is a shy Korean American boy and a newly named section leader of the first sopranos in his local boys' choir. At their summer camp, situated in an idyllic and secluded lakeside retreat, Fee grapples with his complicated feelings towards his best friend, Peter. But as Fee comes to learn how the director treats his section leaders, he is so ashamed he says nothing of the abuse, not even when Peter is in line to be next. When the director is arrested, Fee tries to forgive himself for his silence. Yet the actions of the director have vast consequences, and in their wake, Fee blames only himself. In the years that follow he slowly builds a new life, teaching near his hometown. There, he meets a young student who is the picture of Peter - and is forced to confront the past he believed was gone.
